MacBook Air Water (Wine) Damaged Two Years Ago

So long story short, I have a MacBook Air in like new condition, hardly used. About two years ago, my friend spilled a glass of wine all over it. I immediately turned it off, brought it to Apple Store but they said that they could not save it. So I brought it home, and it has been in my storage since then.

Might be a little late, but I just want to ask if it's still worth anything? Is there anything I can do with it (sell it for parts, send it to someone to fix…?)

Thank you!

I fell asleep above my macbook air. Of course I dribbled a bit on the trackpad. Costed me ~$120? to get that fixed. I would not even bother given your circumstances haha. Initially quoted me like $700 to fix the logic board or some crazy amount.

EDIT: Here's the estimated cost - $0 because it was in warranty period and I was not 100% sure if I did dribble…

    661-02391 Board, Logic, 1.6GHz, 4GB $ 572.00 $ 0.00
    923-0439 Left I/O Assembly $ 27.00 $ 0.00
    S1490LL/A Hardware Repair Labor $ 39.00 $ 0.00
    Total (Tax not included) $ 638.00 $ 0.00

Then they called me and said they found moisture in the trackpad, and quoted me $107 to replace the trackpad + labour costs etc since it was my fault.

Now just need to set it on fire and bury it and all 4 elements are taken care of :)

But yeah , the below suggestion of keeping the laptop for parts is the best advice, though only if you wish to continue using another Air of the same type.

Faulty MB Airs can be sold on tech forums like OCAU or even Facebook. I bought a semi-faulty laptop from OCAU and restored it myself — it just needed a new battery, KB and LCD Panel.

Easy fix, just buy a similar one damaged (most people damage the screens). Your screen should be ok.

Airs unscrew from the bottom, but if you haven't done it before, you could try paying Apple or someone to do it with your parts. You may break things (yes it can end in tears) if you are not 'skilled in the Art' of carefully dealing with thin 'iThings'.

    • I have another MacBook Air 2012 which works perfectly fine. It just has smaller storage and has some scratches and dents so there is still some use from this water damaged MacBook Air. Thanks a lot for your help! It is good to know that it still worths something.

  • I don't understand.

    Was it water or wine…

    • wine

        title says otherwise

        • +2

          Title updated.

  • I just took an Air into Apple because it's not charging. Water damage on the charging board, and the main board. Estimated repair cost = $800.

    I don't think it's worth fixing.

I'm not sure I'd buy a water damaged Air, but I might look out for one with a dead screen…

    • Another $200 and you could have bought a brand new one https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/323737

Buy a pre-loved tested good part online instead. Don't buy new parts if they cost crazymoney. They are worth fixing because the software is so well supported, someone can get use from it for years yet…

there is someone fixed mine for ~$300. And so far did a great job

he is in Ryde, if you are interested let me know and I will give you his info

Yeah - it's still worth something. Just list it on ebay/gumtree as 'not working - for parts. Sold as-is'.

Wouldn't surprise me if you got >$200 for it. I've sold phones with broken screens for $200+

  • I might just sell it as I have another MacBook Air

    • +1

I had a wine damaged Air - got quoted over $1k by the Apple Store to have it repaired. Sold it on gumtree for around $200 :)

    Use it as a placemat.

    Does it turn on today?

Its a sell as 'parts only' not working. You might get something. I'm guessing the value is basically the screen.

    • tried to turn it on today however the light was on you can see the Apple logo then waiting sign. it was pretty much it

      • OS could be corrupt. try with booting with into a USB stick with OS on it.

        or

Try some of these startup key combinations for Mac

        • +1

thank you very much! I just tried the first combination and the computer decided to work but deadly slow. I am restoring the laptop now hopefully it will speed up after ward.

  • Mate I'd be interested in the display if you want to sell it

    • I sent a private message to you

  • If I sell it, do I need to worry about the information on the hard drive?

    • +2

just take the hard drive off and format it.

  • The best use:

Does that model have a cable lock hole, for security lock?
Attach high strength cable that is long enough.
    Use as BOAT Anchor…

Throw it away and get a new one

  • My partners mother dropped a cup of tea into hers, I'm going to attempt a chemical wash with isopropyl alcohol on the logic board, but if all is fails selling the screen and body for parts.

    • +1

I just left it alone for a few years and it works again.

  • Sell it on eBay for parts.
