DIY Grout Sealant

Hello everyone,

Just about to move to a new house. Would like to apply a sealant in wet area. Found quite a vast range in Bunnings. Could anyone recommend me a good product that I could do it with help from another person.
I don't have any previous experience in cement/paint works so looking for something that I could apply easily, such as

Thanks in advance!

  • Where are you using it (kitchen/bathroom/floors everywhere) ? What kind of tiles are they (high gloss, matt)?

Depending on the type of tiles, I would just seal everything (tiles and all)

    • if it's the clear grout sealant that you paint on with a small paint brush, if you get any bit on the tile the tiles stained if not washed off.

Why not ask someone at Bunnings?

Can't always rely on the good old knowledge of OzBargainers, especially if we're all accountants.

Why not ask someone at Bunnings?

Because often hard to find any staff, and even less likely to find someone that knows what you need.

  • Thanks guys for your replies. I'll check with Bunnings. I like the idea if applying with a thin brush.
Its for tiles near the entrance to laundry. I believe it's Matt tiles.

I used Dunlap grout sealer on mine (https://www.bunnings.com.au/dunlop-250ml-grout-sealer_p68200…) and applied 2 coats. It works really well. You will have to wipe off any excess on the tile surface otherwise it will stain.

If it stained the tiles, use spirit in paper towel and buff the tiles. It will be spanking clean.

I also bought a finer brush, didn't use the brush with the bottle. I find the finer brush is easier to control given my grout lines are fine and thin. The bottle brush is good for floor tiles typically with wide grout lines. I suggest u apply paint the grout lines (it's tedious but worth the effort for cheap fix)

    Why?

    • Sealing grout keeps it from going mouldy.

I think it's good for areas like behind sinks and taps.

You can buy a spray can grout sealant.

      • Ive never had mouldy grout. Just clean the bathroom top to bottom once a week.

  • Ok guys thanks for all your input. I bought this from Bunnings and it has a round tip to match the grout width, so looks like its going to make it easy for application.

I'll apply in a small section and see how it holds up. I'll be using it in kitchen areas and shower tiles.

    • How did it go? I'm wondering if grout sealer helps prevent dirt build up in grout. Have you found it effective?
