Device to Watch Movies on? Budget $200

I'm looking for something that I can just transfer movies onto from my PC. I don't mind it not having massive storage space as I can just keep deleting ones I've already watched. Battery life, so I can watch movies for ~12 hours straight, would be ideal (no idea if I would need to get a power bank to be able to do this or not). And needs to be portable. Couple hundred dollars would be a good price for me.

  • I don't have any specific recommendations other than just saying an android tablet is definitely the best.

Keep in mind that it sounds good and all but it does get annoying having to plug in all the time to transfer movies so a device would an expandable micro sd storage would be good.

I'm not sure about Apple, but I know with android devices, you can link it up to a server wirelessly. Download with your computer into a shared drive and access it wirelessly on a tablet. That's how I get my files (unless it's really big, then I plug it in).

With android, there's no need to put the media files through anything like itunes - it'll be a straight transfer of movies to the storage space of the tablet.

Also for media, get one with a good high resolution screen and good speakers.

Not possible with any kind of tablet out there. You would require the cadillac of batteries to achieve 12 hours of non stop video playback.

    Buy a powerbank

    • This laptop actually comes close to 12 hours video playback, I have squeezed 10-10.5 hrs of video playback from this. The only downside to this is that the screen is so bad you won't want to watch it for any more than an hour.

I know you said tablet, but this converts back to a tablet, albeit a very heavy one.

    • I know there is a deal for a 10k mAh power bank on ozbargain atm but im curious if something like this; https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/comsol-660… could give me a full days worth of battery?

      • That Comsol is not worth buying. You could buy a Xiaomi 20,000mah powerbank for same price that can fully power USB type C devices (like Macbooks and chromebooks) as well and charge the powerbank three times as fast.

Don't buy high capacity power banks without "QuickCharge" capability otherwise you will spend like 8 hours charging the bank back to full capacity.

also there is a conversion efficiency loss of roughly 20% (could be wrong here), so for example, a 10,000 powerbank would not fully charge a 10,000 mah battery, it would lose a part of it due to inefficiencies in charging.

        • Any power bank you could recommend me get from a local store so I can use it for tomorrow? I dont mind spending 20$ or so while I wait for a Xiaomi to be delivered (Looking at getting that Lenovo TAB 2, 10.1 that you recommended)

        • @aaronza:

TP-LINK TL-PBG13400 from a local computer shop like MSY maybe, but you would be better of buying a Xiaomi and waiting for it.

I got my powerbank from Mushtato in under 4 days, if you want to buy a powerbank. They only sell the 10,000 mAh version though.

I forgot to mention, The lenovo tab 2 is not full HD — it has 1280 x 800 display. This is an outdated tablet model and was replaced by a Lenovo Tab 3, it costs $279 from JB

You should buy the Tab3 or the SAMSUNG since the Tab 2 only has a single gigabyte of memory. It may lag.

        • @scrimshaw:

Would the memory be an issue if all I want to use it for is watching pre downloaded movies?

          @aaronza:

No. Low memory can be an issue for other things, like web browsing. Can't open too many tabs because the web pages chew up memory and background apps can close by themselves if the tablet thinks it needs to free up more RAM.

        • @scrimshaw:

Thanks for your help going to go buy the tab 2 and even that power bank from office works since I need for tomorrow while I wait for a xiaomi to be delivered (dont shoot me)

Must not have kids.. I wish I had 12 straight to do (profanity) all.

      Agreed.

I don't have a chance to watch anything between Peppa Pig or Milly Molly for the younger ones and whatever crap they're dishing up on Nickelodeon these days.

Only after the kids go to bed and we've cleaned up the mess that only 17 unhinged elephants could replicate, I can sit down and watch something, then fall asleep 30 minutes later.

Takes me a week to watch a movie….

      • Don't forget Octonauts and Paw Patrol….

  • I have a amazon fire hd 8. Comes in 16g and 32gb with micro sd slot. Doesn't come with google playstore natively but can be hacked on to it.
I stream through kodi on it and it does the job. Battery life its great for it's size because of of somewhat average screen. Though at it's size it is more than adequate.
Bought it during an amazon sale for about $60-$80 if i recall but had to use a ship forwarder to get it here, which added to the cost.
