Changing Availability as Casual in Retail

I just got a job in retail. Signed contract for casual position couple of days back.

Work hasn't even started and now I need to slightly change my availability. Can I change my availabilities without an issue? My submitted availability was Sunday to Friday. But I need to drop Sunday and can work only after 2pm on Monday, due to personal reason. Is there any problem to doing this that I'm not aware of?

I actually haven't received roster at work. But was told I start from next week.

Thanks.

It might not look to good to your boss. He/she hired you based on many things, but one would have been your availability, now before work has even started you are telling them you can work less days. It could even look like lying.

Just think why your availability and whether its more important than work. Just remember, its very easy to get rid of and replace casuals.

+1 when you're new to the workplace and haven't established any trust with the manager it's possible they may think you're being shifty

Be honest and upfront and make sure you explain fully why your personal reasons dictate a change in roster / availability.

That being said they might allow you to change shifts if there is somebody else willing to take the Sunday spot (Sunday = double pay, so most uni students would be desperate and willing to work these days).

      • Thanks for your reply. Since I am casual, i don't know what days and time they will call me for shifts. I have full availability Tuesday to Friday from opening to closing and Monday after 2pm till closing though.

I am thinking of speaking with my manager of the change and explain reason to him on my first shift, so that I have consistent availability afterwards. Do you think that will be alright? I didn't think it would be a big issue, but now i am bit nervous.

        • I wouldn't wait until your first shift to tell him, I would tell him ASAP. If you wait until the first shift, then he has probably done a couple of weeks rosters and now he has to change/cover shifts, and I know that when casuals ask me to change the roster because of some reason or another, it pisses me off. Especially if they have know for ages but only tell me after the roster is done.

        • as per Ados comment it would be a good idea to speak to your boss as soon as possible. If you know his or her mobile number, give them a ring asap.

Ask your boss. Will they have a problem with it? They might. Will it be an issue? Depends.

Remember they may have hired you because are going to be available sunday to friday.

How and when this sudden change in availability come about could also be a factor.

You'll need to ask your boss. They've hired you based on a certain criteria and you've kind've done the bait and switch on them.
As a casual, unfortunately you'd be in quite a vulnerable position where they might tell you to not bother showing up.
But if you can, be honest and upfront with them and hopefully that may build some good trust with the manager
    Good luck and congrats

    Choosing god over penalty rates?

If that were the case they would have know long before they put their availability for work from sunday to friday.

What is the personal reason if you don't mind me asking?

Unless it is something really really really important, I personally wouldn't change. It's a good way for them to stop giving you shifts…

If at all possible can you stick it out for 3 months and then change?
