Is "Optus New Phone Trade up" Useless?

Hi,

This is kind of a rant.

In 2016 July I bought a Samsung Galaxy S7 from Optus on the 24-month $85 My Plan Plus plan with a $20 discount per month, effectively costing me $65 per month. I was looking forward to using the "Optus New Phone Trade Up" feature of these plans to upgrade it in a year to a better phone at a similar price. I'm yet to see something like the S8 for the same price, which is saddening. The cheapest plan is $80 (with no discounts) for the S8 unless you go for a flex plan, which is no match for my existing deal.

Is there anyone else in the same boat as I am? If so, what are you planning to do? Or if you "were" in the same boat as I am, have you found a reasonable remedy for this?

Cheers

  • I don't have an answer to these because I buy phones outright however, if you haven't hit up a student you might know for a 10% off code bringing $80 down to a more manageable $72

  • +1

Galaxy S8 was around $58 a month during the Optus Family and Friends Deal a few months back

    • But that would mean keeping two lines. I don't want to keep the existing one.

  • You are comparing a deal with a discount to one without.

The trade up is okish if you dont have discounts at all and just hop from one to another.

    • That's kind of the point. I'm wondering why the same deal isn't available for the S8. Perhaps because it was released a bit later in the year compared to the S7.

      • Its a new flagship. Ask optus to see what they can do.

        • So was the S7 a year ago. I suppose the deals change every year then.

  • In 2016 July I bought a Samsung Galaxy S7
I'm yet to see something like the S8

it's not worth upgrading unless one has money to burn.

    • I was hoping that I would have to pay just $99.
