Search for Cheap Coffee Beans - Anyone tried Lazzio from Aldi?

I was spending $35/kg for decent coffee beans for our Rancilio Silvia and Breville smart grinder. I wanted to save some costs so went in search of some cheaper beans.

A while ago, I tried Coles branded beans and Vitoria beans and couldn't get a good shot out of them. It seemed they weren't fresh and ended up throwing the rest out.

I tried Lavazza (on sale at Coles) and it was just drinkable but again, they didn't seem fresh and couldn't get a nice shot out of them. It was like a pod coffee… sorry pod coffee lovers but it's true. :)

I then tried the Lazzio beans (medium roast) from Aldi for $12/kg and I was really surprised. The shot gives good crema and great flavour, and they seem quite fresh. Anyone else tried them?

TL;DR - if you're looking for cheaper coffee beans, try Aldi beans (Lazzio).

They had the dioro demaglia beans $10 per kg in special buys at my local today, they aren't bad imo. Come in a red white ND green bag.

    • I grabbed some of these. Fresh ground in a plunger at work these beans are ordinary. In an espresso machine. Pretty good. Amazing difference.

Your poor Silvia deserves a better life than you're giving her.

She did have to suffer through some bad beans but she's looked after with regular backflushing and descaling. And she had a new water pump installed. 👍🏻

  • Good advice because I have run out of these https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/256837 though I still have 16 of these https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/267577 in reserve.

  • +1 for Lazzio medium roast beans. I also have the Rancilio Silvia and Breville smart grinder and i see good results on a grind 16 with 13.2s into the Rancilio double basket. Let me know how it goes OP

    • Thanks califrag. I'm currently using 12 grind for 16 seconds. The coffee level reaches just under the line in the double basket.

With 13 seconds, does your coffee level reach the line?

+1 for the ALDI Dark Roast beans for the cafetière.

  • I used these beans with my Aeropress works a treat.
I haven't tried them with my espresso machine though.

  • So you tried the Coles Fair Trade Dark beans? Always been curious about these?

Just an FYI regarding Vittoria (Oro). I love their beans. Tried some pre ground on special, was horrible. Sent it in to Vittoria. They said it was stale and sent me new stuff. It was better, but still no where near as good as some 8 month old beans I had.

Can't beat Dark Roast from Aldi for the price… around 12.00 a Kilo…

  • While I am drinking Dark Roast Lazzio currently as another suggestion, I was also blown away by Harris Coffee Columbian that is always on sale at Coles for $18. In fact all 23 roasts from Harris are excellent.
