Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz, or Grange as it's known to most, is Australian wine royalty. The 2012 Grange is one of the best vintages to ever come under the label in recent times. The wine is unmistakably complex, flamboyant and lifted. The earthiness is well integrated with the aromas of dark fruits, grounded coffee, red liquorice and black olives, which leads to a firmly structured finish.

    How is this a bargain?

    It's a $150+ price increase from last year's one…

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/239386

    • Inflation?

      • -6

Inflation isn't a reason to post it as a bargain…

Different years will always hold different value in Grange.

Seems the price is on EBay and you can use the code Cozzie for $632.50

    • Code "Cozzie" not ready yet? What gives?

If you have a 20 year old son, consider buying this and cellaring for his 30th. He'll be old enough to appreciate it then and Grange likes about 15 years to develop.

Don't tell anyone you bought it in 2017 and they'll think you spent thousands.

      I tried that.
I bought an expensive bottle of VSOP brandy when my son was born and when he turned 21, we opened it together and had a taste.
He hated it and I got to drink it over the next 3 months.
Could not have worked out better…

      • He hated it

Should have bought him a bottle of Spatlese Lexia at 21. They'd have liked that.

    • Nah. I'd buy a 1996 for the same price or less. ($450 to $610 - https://www.wickman.net.au/Grange_Prices.aspx). You can drink that next year when both turn 21. I would only suggest holding on to a bottle of wine for more than a year if you can cellar it properly, otherwise there is a strong chance you'll end up with a bottle of wine that is undrinkable.

      • Professionally stored above someone's stove for the past 5 years.

        • That's the one. I personally know of two bottles of grange that were stored in, lets say, less than ideal conditions. One was on top of a fridge (an uncle did that for one of my cousins), and the other was kept (by my father-in-law) in a cupboard in QLD for years before being brought to Melb where it was kept in a study somewhere. Neither bottle survived the many years of fluctuating temperature & humidity.

So yep, if buying an old bottle you do need to make sure that you can trust that it's been stored properly. Once every couple of years Penfolds hold 'recorking clinics' (https://www.penfolds.com/en-au/events/recorking-clinics) so if you get a bottle that has been checked and certified as ok - or get a bottle from a collection where one of the bottles has been checked - then you should be good.

        • @PlasticSpaceman:

Assuming it has been stored well since then ;)

        • @tightwad: True, but a fairly good bet if someone is going to bother taking the wine to a clinic then they will probably store it well afterwards. ;-)

Any lobster deals to go with it?

    • Only if you're a State Liberal MP.

A further discount will only apply on the presentation of your Mafia-Affiliation Club Card.

  • When will the 2017 Grange come out?

    • 2022

  • Excuse my igorance, but I'm curious how people can justify spending so much on a bottle of wine? Surely, it can't be worth that much…

    • It's no difference to spending 5k or 500k on a car. Everyone has a budget and some people have money to burn.

  • Thanks OP, bought 7

  • …….. what would this wine be worth in 10 years?

  • Anyone help with the COZZIE voucher? Not working. Any ideas?
