Looftlighter (240v model)

Hi All,

I'm looking for a Looftlighter charcoal starter and they are way more expensive than the days when Bunnings had them on clearance.

Best I can do so far is $139.95 with free shipping from the Australian distributor or picked up from a dealer. Most dealers don't have prices listed, so it's possible there is a bargain out there that I'm not aware of.

Other theories on cheap prices:

  • US model is way cheaper, but 110v only so I'm discounting it outright. If I am wrong a heads up is much appreciated.
  • A 240v version with Aussie plug is available in NZ for $139 NZD but once shipping/currency conversion/warranty is considered probably not worth it. There might be other Kiwi options that take advantage of currency differential.
  • It also appears the UK model is the right voltage with just plug conversion required. Seems to be as low as £40.10 fulfilled by Amazon UK or approx £55 from a range of other shops (eg here), but none ship to Australia AFAICT.
  • Perhaps a cheaper alternative to the Looftlighter is well regarded by OzBargain BBQers? I'm looking for something with a significant airflow, which is why I'm discounting most heat guns.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

  • I use a charcoal chimney, much cheaper and works well - why do you prefer a looflighter style product?

  • My apartment balcony is in a wind tunnel. I either have to light my existing chimney on the ground in a spot which is really inefficient when windy (there's a 12cm gap between each of the apartment partitions in precisely the right location to forcibly ventilate the top of the chimmney rather than the intakes at the bottom) or take out the grill racks and set it up in the bbq before reinstalling the racks afterwards.

A Looftlighter would let me use the lighting hatch of my BBQ and avoid lighting on the ground/relocating grills. It also would save lighting coal in batches, which I do currently due to the size of the chimmney (and irritates the missus - who wanted an instant on gas bbq - when she wants dinner quickly).

  • +1

I have a looftlighter, used it once, but I'm too lazy/unorganised to cook on charcoal.

$70 + post ($85 total) I'll express courier it up to you tomorrow with tracking & insurance
