[Vent Post] Enter a Comp and Win a Lifetime Supply of Spam

Just wanted to vent.

I enter comps posted via this site, and know that whilst doing so, am possibly going to have my email use/sold to some spammer or scammer sites/companies ..
Most days since re-starting my comping fun, I find my inbox with 50-100 emails a day, most of which are subscriptions made (to get those extra or mandatory entries) with maybe 10-20 being spam (or even worse scams/virus')

This morning I awake to find close to 900 emails in my inbox .. some ********** has used my email and subscribed me to over 500 sites (some WP, and wanting confirmation of subscription, the rest a welcome email) alongside over 300 scam/spam sites (you know the ones, do not dare click on the links or attacked files)and most at the same time 12:10am

I guess the worst part of it is that the comp I entered was most likely one with a prize that was never going to be given away (alike many gleam comps for example which are bring caught out as BS .. due to people getting smart and knowing it can drive traffic to their TY etc pages alongside subscriptions and so on via setting up fake comps via gleam)

I hope it was a 1 off .. but has taken up a fair bit of time deleting them and making sure legit ones were not in the mix.
I also hope whoever was behind it meets bubba (in or out of jail) and becomes his play toy for life.

Don't use your primary email for comps.

If you have a gmail account, next time use an alias. eg. if you're subscribing to a Microsoft website and your email is [email protected] then use [email protected]

This will mean that any spam you receive with that +microsoft address was because Microsoft shared your email.

You can also use this to create filters so any emails to [email protected] for example can automatically go to a competition folder.

    • will that land into original gmail account?

      • Yes. Test it by sending yourself an email in that format.

        • Tested. it worked. But is there any way of adding an alias in Gmail account.

        • @ozyboy: What do you mean?

I have 5 or so actual Gmail accounts that I can send from and receive into the one inbox, you may have to link them to the master account.

        • @John Kimble: so I have to create new account and link to master account. Earlier use to have nickname/alias in Gmail ( like your office email alias )

        • @ozyboy: Isn't that what Ryanek already explained? Or are you talking about something else?

    • That's sweet
Too bad my email's already whored out

    • perfect!
