Vodafone Roaming in China

Hey all,

I'm going to china for the first time and will just spending two nights in Shanghai pre cruise. I'm with virgin, but have borrowed an extra iPhone. If I get a postpaid Vodafone plan that includes data and the $5 pd roaming, will I be able to access google and gmail?

Thanks!

  • I think your best option would be to download a VPN app, this will let you get onto any site you want. I did this when I was in Shanghai 2 years ago :)

    • a lot of the VPN's get shut down pretty frequently, even the paid ones

ALSO, a friend who lives over there told me that there's been a change recently in some parts of China and you can't buy prepaid sim cards anymore unless you're a local. If this is true, thats one of the stupidest things i've heard in a long time

  • If I get a postpaid Vodafone plan that includes data and the $5 pd roaming

Why not pickup a local sim?

The cheapest voda plan is $30/m for 1GB of data, plus $5/day x 2. So $40 for 1GB plus a lot of work for 2 days access.

  • I've just been to China and used $5 Vodafone roaming - no problems using Google and Gmail when you use it.

I was on a tour and a number of other people tried to buy Chinese sim cards, apparently it's a bit of a nightmare and Google and Gmail ARE banned if you use those (but you can get around it with a VPN). If you're only there 2 days I'd just use the roaming.

If you connect to Wifi you will need to download a VPN app - but honestly the roaming worked absolutely flawlessly and for the most part I didn't bother with Wifi.

  • Roaming in China with Vodafone for some reason means all blocked sites arr allowed. Used Facebook and Gmail with no problems.
