Action Cam You Would Buy for What Purpose

Hi all,

With Spring around the corner, I'm sure we're all looking forward to stretching our legs and getting outdoors a bit more. Apart from using your phones to capture and sharing the moment, do action cams appeal to you?

I've got the SJCam - SJ4000 action cam and I primarily use it when I go cycling more or less for the purpose of safety (dashcam) as oppose to extreme sports. It comes with a few accessories including helmet mounts, waterproof housing, belt clip so I could always use it for other purposes. There seems to be a lot on the market to choose from;

Popular / Well Established
GoPro; Sony; Kaiser Baas; TomTom; Garmin

Traditional Brands
Olympus; Panasonic; Toshiba

Lesser known / Bang for your buck
Xiaomi Yi; SJCam; Olfi; Veho; iSAW; Wimlus

What factors contributed to your decision and what do you use it for? Budget; purpose; quality; battery; brand; accessories etc.

  • i just purchased a Xiaomi Yi for my trip to tokyo and am super keen to start using it

    • The Xiaomi Yi 4K was also on my consideration list but I only needed 1080p for dashcam/safety so I thought I'll hold out a little.

Did your Yi come with accessories as well so you can use it say, on the Maricar

I would have probably got the Yi as well if I was going to Japan. Record all the videos of my getting lost trying to find the right train :P, eating all the ramen and all the cool temples.

speaking of ramen, if you're in Tokyo between the 26OCT - 05NOV, the 9th Tokyo Ramen Show 2017 will be held in Komazawa Olympic Park. There is an entry fee I think but check it out of you're there.

      • I picked up the 1080p version from Amazon, had to buy all the accessories myself. Super keen for maricar(basically the reason I got it). Sadly not going to be there till late Nov

      • Cool! Thanks for that iTzTeFish :)

  • Dashcam - Blackvue DR650sw 2 channel with hard wiring to car - the most important aspect of a dashcam is reliability and it is always on. Hardwired so it doesn't look horrible and get in the way.

Fast motion sports - GoPro 3 black would be my pref but I cannot get my hands on a decent sample these days - with the backpac battery and a 64mb card, it can shoot 720P@60fps continously for over 4 hours. Awesome way of capturing those opportunity shots.

Sony X1000v - multiples of these used with a remote to capture those planned moments. 1080p@60fps with shake reduction will go on for about 30 minutes.

Was going to get a drone but found out that a lot of ski resorts and other heavily populated areas will not allow drones.

    • I've got the Dod Dashcam and they're great during the day, average after dark.

What type of sports do you do where it’s good to take 60fps footage?
And continuous 4 hours on the GoPro 3 black? That’s really good!

I had the same idea of taking my drone to the ski fields too but with all the restrictions, I thought action cams would be the best option.

      • Motorsports - I wish I can get 200fps with motion reduction for slowing down footage. Unfortunately, there are no onboard camera options for that (or at least within my budget).

Kayak fishing - some awesome moments with wildlife encounters, or the moment the fish strikes at a rod. Underwater shot opportunities too. I forgot to mention the Waterwolf cams for underwater shots. Most number of applications for a cam is during fishing. Camera on the burley pot to collect visual data of structures and response, a trolling camera to watch response of fish to certain lures/rigs… the list goes on.

My sister uses the gear for snow sports so she gets the use of the cams for the winter months.

All in all, I think I have 8 action cams commissioned. Waterwolf, GoPro 5 black, Sony X1000v, Nikon 360. Still looking for a 3black in good nick.

  • I am currently looking for a budget cam mainly for scuba diving when on holiday. I don't want to spend too much as I know a few people whose case failed them and camera flooded and ruined.

I am eyeing off the Gitup Git 2 Pro. Uses the same case and mounts etc as GoPro 4 and for around $150 seems good value. Any comments on this one appreciated.

  • I use the SJ4000 on my motorcycle helmet, wouldn't mind if the battery was a little better but it's enough for 99% of my trips
