Vietnam last minute. Any visa issues??

Have just been told I have 14-16 days with no work from 1st Sept, so I wanted to bring my Vietnam trip fwd to this time, instead of October I was looking at….

What are the visa issues and getting VOA/on the plane last minute, and turning up without accommodation booking???

Thanks in advance.

you need to arrange a visa in australia.

    there is no VOA

    • There is visa on arrival at SGN airport before immigration

      • But you need to start the process before you arrive. I went through the embassy myself, but most VOA places need a couple of days to provide a letter to allow you to get VOA (as far as I remember)

I used vietnamvisapro.com and got my approval letter through within 24-48 hours after application with payment. It cost about US$6 from memory - and the letter came quite quickly, maybe the next day or so.
Once you have the letter you just go to the arrivals visa office at SGN airport just before you go through immigration.
You hand over your letter, your completed NA1, your passport and US$25 and wait.
They will call you about 20 mins later (if you're lucky) and return your passport with a visa attached.
Then you are good to go.

    https://visa.mofa.gov.vn/Homepage.aspx

Vietnam's E-VISA. Select English on the top of the page to change language then press Fill Form.

Starting from 2017 there is no Visa on Arrival. They have modernized and visa is applied online.

    • Have you used this service before? I didn't think it was available for Australia?

      • Never used it so I cannot clarify if it works for aussies. I went to Vietnam in 2013 and just paid 25 USD VISA on arrival.

Is it just me? Every time I look at or think about that link, I always see the word "mofo".

    Accommodation no problem.

To get a VOA you need to get a letter - you can get these online for a fee - you can pay express.
You will need to pay a stamp fee when you get to Vietnam.

  • I agree with dasher86. It is cheapest option, and it is the option that I used to go with all of the time. Will save you - I forget - maybe $40, but will delay you at the VNam airport by maybe 1 hour. But it saves you time in Aust. sending passport/going to the Embassy twice. etc. Do not turn up without a visa/voa approval letter. Note you need USD.

    • Noted. Need to pay in USD only. Thanks.

      • went to Vietnam in June… and you can pay in VND but it works out to be more expensive. But you need to ask them.

  • There are websites that does Vietnam Visa Express service. I have used one of the online websites before cost me about US$25 per person and the visa letter came out in 19 hours. If you dont pay for express, it takes 2-3 days. Assuming you are holding an Aussie passport.

Try to book accommodations before you leave, it is not difficult just use booking.com or other sites. Then also book your private airport transfer to hotel, there are many websites that offer such service. Everything can be booked quickly these days.

Bring some USD, you might need it.

    • Remember not to fall for the fake Vietnam Visa websites!

I haven't but a former work colleague did.

      • I dont think I could tell but I just used one website with HTTPS certificate. I was a little worried initially as it was my first trip to VN but it turned out well.

    • $US25?? I think that the price has gone up, maybe 18 months ago.

  • It takes literally 5 minutes to book a hotel. Book somewhere with free cancellation and cancel the day before.

Good idea. Probably over thinking that it might be an issue…..

  • Lots of information previously on OZB. Use the search function

  • I went to Vietnam in April and got my visa online. but can't see which site I got it from. it took less than 24 hours to get.

    • Good to know.
Seems not to be to much of an issue…..
Looks like it won't be the drama I imagined it could be.

  • Would a Vietnam visa be needed for a 6hr stop over at the airport?

    • if you want to get out of the airport most probably.

  • I have used several co's for VOA.
You may get deal slightly better but I found this co to be good.
Note that VOA letter may list severeal people as they do a bulk application to V'nam Immigration. But that is not a problem.

If you have a UK passport (and thus do not qualify for Aust Parliament hehe) you can do short visit without a visa - I think 15 days

  • Hey All, flying Singapore- Da Nang next month on Aus passport. Anyone know if Da Nang is equipped to deal with an e-visa/voa? Seems cheaper and less hassle than trudging to the embassy for a visa here.
