Want to Upgrade Graphic Card, Which Is Best Value for Money?

After a new GPU, currently running a AMD 6950, it's getting a bit on.

What's the sweet spot for performance/price these days ?

Or are there new cards coming out I should wait for ?

Current Specs are;
i5 4460 or 4440…can't remember tbh
12gb of ram
Sapphire 6950
24" 1920x1200 Monitor, 16:10

Don't have immediate plans to get a higher res monitor.

The only games I am really playing at the moment are Starcraft II, League of Legends, Dota, Overwatch and a odd indie game here of there, my setup runs all these fine at great frames. (60fps+) Overwatch runs on low, but I don't know any better so I am not complaining.

Only reasons I am considering updating is cause alot of my mates are playing PubG and I want to play the new Forza when it comes out.

  • need to know your complete system specs…….
    and what games you are looking to run

    • Wanting to play the new Forza game when it comes out, also lots of mates are complaining and want me to play PubG with them, i can run it…but only at 20fps -_-

    I would consider the GTX 1060 to be the best price performer. It should be the Radeon RX 560 but miners have inflated the price and made it hard to source.

    • I have the 2GB RX 560 at the moment which a buyer is picking up tonight for $180. (phew!! SOO UNDER POWERED). Just wait for Vega 54 and in Nov when stocks should stablise. Hopefully around $650.

    1060 is a good performer these days for 1080p gaming.

  • 1060 6gb

  • Depends on budget, prices of the mid/high end cards are inflated because of demand due to crypto mining.

    • Ideally I wanted to spend about $350, as I paid about that for my 6950, but now everything seems more expensive….from the looks of it I might be needing to fork out over $400!

      • Not too bad just now as the miners started to forgo GPU mining. I bought a 2 month old Asus Stix GTX1080 OC for $600 earlier today from GT, complete with receipt from MSY. The seller had 2 of them for sale, and was also selling 2x GTX1060 Strix's for $320 each.

        Keep an eye out and you should be able to pickup a 1/2 decent priced card.

        • I will keep my eyes on gumtree, but it would have to be a really good deal for me to consider a used card. Saving $50 or so isn't worth the risk for me.

          Been burnt a few times buying used PC parts, quite sad that people do that to other PC enthusiast's, but ah well You have to be lucky sometimes!

        • @m0tyrider:

          Should be able to get a 1060 6gb within your $350 budget with current ebay sales, or $375 for a galax 1060 6gb from MSY/Umart etc.

  • GTX1060 6GB

    • Why 6GB? I read the performance difference between 3 and 6 doesn't warrant the price difference. Does PUBG for example use that extra RAM?

      • GTX 1060 3gb is neutered a bit compared to the 6gb with regards to the core configuration.

        3gb: 1152 shader processors, 72 texture mapping units, 48 render output units
        6gb: 1280 shader processors, 80 texture mapping units, 48 render output units

        • Still a pretty considerable price difference though, right?

          @Meconium:

          Used to be with the mining craze, now it's a lot more reasonable. I think it's worth it so VRAM shouldn't ever be a limitation at 1080p and the ~10% performance bump

  • I think I will wait for the next generation of video cards to come out - The 6gb 1060 is the sweet spot of the current bunch at the moment, but its already over 12 month's old.

    Within the next 6 months I think there will be some new cards coming out.
