What Is The "Demand" Rate with Alinta Energy?

Check the image here https://imgur.com/a/Sp56i

Alinta have an electricity rate card entered into Energy Made Easy that is significantly cheaper than any other provider. It is called Fair Deal 25 (Single Rate) - Demand and you may also note they have another ratecard Fair Deal 25 (Single Rate) which is more on par with other providers. So that one word "demand" seems to make an enormous difference.

There is no info on their website. After calling Alinta I'm not any clearer on what the "demand" signifies and I am concerned it's all a big bamboolzement designed for you to switch to Alinta but end up on the more expensive rate of Fair Deal 25 (Single Rate)

Any insight anyone?

  • No Idea - but I tried to price match that 25% discount with Origin and they said their offers were better than those of Alinta and closed my enquiry - Not sure what that means…..

  • I too came across this and wondered the same thing. If you look carefully, you'll notice that the demand charges are in cents/kW/day and not cents/kWh. My understanding from what I've read is that demand charging applies for the maximum instantaneous draw rather than usage over time. To be able to measure demand usage, one must have a smart meter (i.e. an interval meter). If you don't have a smart meter, then forget about the demand rates as they don't apply to you.
