Suitable HDD for NAS Drive

Hi all,

Looking to set up a NAS drive for some more convenient storage at the house with plenty of 3-6 TB deals recently on external portable drives. A friend recommended I opted for a drive with a 7200 rpm speed over 5400. The drive speeds for most of these external portables aren't openly advertised (ebay page or even product comparison from manufacturer) but I've generally found them to be 5400.

Would it be better to buy an internal drive, say 5 TB 7200 rpm, and an enclosure (could be USB or outlet powered) or have others experienced satisfactory performance from 5400 rpm drives. Even better, can anyone confirm if there is any worthwhile performance increase in having a 7200rpm drive for NAS purposes.

Thanks

WD Red is my go to NAS drive.

    • Looks like they are designed specifically for NAS applications too with 5400rpm. Will keep an eye out, Thanks!

    • Definitely - brilliant drives!

I've been using 6 x 3TB Reds in my main machine and another 2 in a second machine for over 5 years with absolutely no problems - and running 24/7 all that time.

The only problem I had was when I broke off the connector part of the hard drive case when I moved one of the drives at one stage.

It was entirely my fault, but was still just within warranty - so I contacted WD in Asia, explained the situation, and they replaced it under warranty. That's customer service!!

I'm just now in the process of buying another 8 x 3TB Reds for my new video server and 2 x 4TB for my new music server. I wouldn't even consider any other brand or model!

And because they are 5400rpm they are almost silent - and with 18 drives that becomes important!

how many drives in your NAS? If you're using multiple drives in a RAID config just get the best value cheapest ones, if one fails, just swap it out

    • Definitely just 1, connected to a router I recently purchased (netgear nighthawk). Will only be using for home storage.

      • Go a WD Red definitely then :)

edit: PM me, there was someone I found through OZB that was selling them cheap, you may wish to contact him .. i got a couple of drives from him and they worked well. I tried to send you a message but your account is not open to new messages

  • WDReds in my Synology NAS, running now since September 2012. Rock Solid!

  • From what i just read in the description, it sounds like you want to use one drive as a NAS? not recommended. you should get a two bay NAS, and run two hard drives of the same size drive in RAID 1.

but definitely go WDReds, the extra cost is worth it.
