AmEx Essential Credit Card "Smartphone Screen Repair"

Hey all,

Fellow OzBargainers, I need your advice - The AMEX essentials card covers smartphone screen repairs for up to $500 (lets put the excess aside for now).

Has anyone had experiences of fixing a tablet screen at a phone repair shop and being covered for this? This is probably really obvious, but how strictly will they adhere to this?

I guess what I am asking is if only smartphones are covered under this, or if this covers repairs at a smartphone repair shop (eg smartwatches, tablets etc) and if AMEX would even see any difference in this?

Situation: Buying a Surface Pro 4 with a cracked screen, getting it fixed at various retailers for around ~$450. Covered minus 10% excess?? This was be great if I could because then I could afford a SP4 + keyboard case + pen. Life rarely works like this; so probably too good to be true right?

Say if I was going to buy one "new", I could get peace of mind in knowing I essentially have free ADP?

Thanks!

um dont you have to buy it new on the amex for it to apply??

    • when you pay for your phone or contract with your Essential Credit Card

Never mind you do, completely neglected to understand that line.

  • "Smartphone(s) means an electronic device used for mobile telecommunications over a cellular network (including BlackBerrys, iPhones and similar)."

    Doubt it.

  • From the full terms and conditions

Cover is effective for each Smartphone only when You Purchase the Smartphone outright in a single transaction or on a monthly contract, using:
    (a) Your American Express Essential Credit Card; or
    (b) With American Express Membership Rewards® points.
Important: Where You switch Your monthly contract to Your American Express Essential Credit Card, cover will only commence thirty (30) days from the first monthly payment on Your American Express Essential Credit Card.

Technically if I was going to buy a smartphone in one transaction; does it matter where that one transaction is from?

    • Do the terms and conditions specify you must buy it from a specific set of retailers or locations?

      (P.S the answer is no)

      • Yes while this is true, even if I buy it off eBay I still am purchasing it "outright in a single transaction"
However, would this work if I was getting my Surface Pro 3/4 fixed at a screen repair shop (meant for mobiles, but also does tablets) would mean I pay $45 for it to be fixed instead of $450.

Because that would be awesome if I could.
