Ceiling fan for formal lounge

We have an old school ceiling fan in our formal, which also has an AirCon. For years I've been threatening to remove the fan: it's unflattering and ugly. Now revisiting and hope to get a replacement. Happy to pay the price for something a little more respectable and befitting for a Formal Lounge. Light is optional.

The "Fanaway" type looks quite pretty. Has anyone use them and happy? I like its retractable.

Can't get rid of fan altogether as we live in Brisbane, and much prefer a fan rather than AC.

The fanaways do look nice, and I've installed quite a few of them. They are fairly heavy, and generally well made, so they need some fairly solid timber and some serious screws.

Some of the early ones, now they are a few years on, have issues with the light covers yellowing badly, though these models have the fluro light, not the LED. Also, they can get a wobble to them if dust starts to accumulate in the spring mechanism, causing one blade to not come out quite as far as the other two. Beacon offer in home warranty for them, and are usually quite reasonable to deal with.

The "Fanaway" type looks quite pretty.

For a moment there I thought you were talking about Faye Dunaway as I've never heard of "Fanaway".

These Modn fans look quite minimalist and discreet.

    • Oh dear Faye, my sweetheart. Plus Meryl Streep, Audrey….. Wish we can see more of them and the likes….

I like Minimalist, that's the word I meant but didnt use. Some of them looks so intense. Will certainly look more into them. Did you install, and what do you think? I need quite and durable, not hard to please LOL.

I have old, ugly and noisy fans too and I'd definitely consider these when I replace them as they look quite discreet, quiet and easy to maintain.

    Big Ass Fans.

    Just because of the name.

    • was just about to post them as well. Saw them at the Melbourne show and they looked really good.

  • OK, I passed over this post a few times, but it nagged at the old man in me. Pumpkin, you're about my age, we don't have fancy formal dining rooms anymore in this day and age. At best, they have been turned into bedrooms by millennial kids that left home and returned, or we're all in houses on small blocks with no space for 'formal'.

I'm joking, of course, we have a house built long ago that has a formal room. It has a teen's drum kit in it now and a big dining table pushed to the side.
We eat in the kitchen like everyone else, and live in the smaller room next to the kitchen, not the big formal room at one end of the house.

In any case, if I was putting in a fan, I guess I would get something like this:

The fanaway reminds me of something my mum would have had.

    • Aha, I've always thought you are a Miss or Missus..

Thanks for sharing your fond memories. Things we do for our kids!

  • I reckon a fanaway is too much of a compromise on the fan side if it is for your primary cooling. There are hundreds of different designs. Pick one that becomes a statement in its own right.
