Shipping 10kg Parcel from Australia to USA

Hi all,

I am looking at sending a parcel to the USA and don't have much experience with this. I have a parcel which is 150cm in length, 30cm width and 40cm high. The parcel weighs about 10kg.

Usual choices like Australia Post are out of the question due to its size. All the major carriers want between $350- $800 to send it via air (DHL, ship 2, etc). I can't seem to easily find any cheaper alternatives like sea freight.

The recipient is happy for it to take a month to get there.

Thanks in advance

Haha, for $800 you may be able to get a return ticket to US (I paid $794 SYD-LAX return for the end of this month).

First things first, what kind of headphones are you shipping??

Its a Mercedes Benz towbar setup which apparently was never sold in the US!

      • why not check if a canadian company to send it to the address.

i used to do the reverse alot, and get parts from the USA and shipped to sweatgrass Montana and then drive over the border to pick them up

        • The buyer already tried with no luck.

  • the thing is over sized by nature so your already paying a premium there

what would be an acceptable price be?

also remembering anything out of Australia is expensive comparative to into because "Australia" tax

    • Ive realised that. Was hoping for the $200 mark via sea but couldnt easily get a price for sea.

  • Would it fit into Ebay Global Shipping Program dimensions?

    • Read up on it. Thanks for the suggestion. its only for items in the US?

So you've sold or are selling the tow bar?

Sea freight is 2-3 months. That to me isn't an acceptable time for a relatively small package. Tow bars aren't 150cm can you repackage it into a smaller box?

What method of shipping did you quote to the buyer?

If they want it they can pay for the shipping. It's not your problem to sort out a cheaper method. If they don't want to pay that much, I'm sure they can source it locally.

    $250 sounds about right.

    • Selling it on ebay. The tow bar assembly could be a tad under 150 cms. I said i would find out the price and let them know. Cant seem to easily find a sea freight cost.

      • I'd be upfront and honest and say you can't post it unless they want to pay through the nose in postage.

Give them the cheapest air postage you can find.

Aus Post quotes sea freight at 2-3 months, then probably another month for customs. It also is only $40 less for a 10kg max length parcel than the 5 day air freight option.

Sounds like they'd be better off contacting Mercedes Benz Germany directly and getting them to help.

As if they don't sell tow bars in the USA. Yanks are bloody weird.

    You could try skippypost?

    • Tried them - its oversize for them.

Cut it in half, get him to weld it back together when it gets there. Don't forget to add "some assembly required" stickers.

Don't post an eBay item by sea - it will take months and the buyer will get a refund easily. You'll be out the towbar and the several hundred $ postage. If they want it they can pay for air freight.
