Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1 TB USB 2.0 - $25 on eBay???

There's a recent post on OzB that has been deleted - i suspect it refers to this—-

is the hard drive original? not fake?? any idea?

I've also found some other listing too, which is very cheap as well:

http://shop.ebay.com.au/?_from=R40&_trksid=m570&_nkw=Western…

they are really cheap that its really hard to believe. also, the listing look the same although the username are different.

so, any thoughts please?

      • Or people on ebay simply reported the listing. Because only ONE seller was de-registered. The rest are still going along fine. I've reported the remaining ones to Trust and Safety though. We'll see if they get de-registered too..

        • Did you report them on the suspicion that they might be fake? And how does ebay verify that it is indeed a scam? The whole process still doesn't make sense to me, especially when probably noone has received their items yet.

        • Probably on the basis of hijacked accounts? I don't know..

      • The stolen drives in Malaysia were recovered.

        http://www.salepromos.com/blog/news/10000-hard-drives-stolen…
Police were alerted to the theft about two hours later. Early investigations led to the arrest of five suspects, two of whom were employees at the warehouse, and the other three staff at an adjacent warehouse.

The following day, police detained another three suspects, two at the warehouse where the theft occurred, while another accomplice was picked up in Nilai.

“The accomplice in Nilai was a former employee of the warehouse. He led police to a house in Behrang, Tanjung Malim, where most of the loot was recovered.

    • LOL, you're dodgy.

  • surprise surprise :/

  • +1

    < is not suprised lol

  • I took the plunge and bought 1 from 2 sellers. 1 seller has marked the item posted. One sellers name translates to Wang Hao, while the other translates to 'with the static'. Weird

  • They're all gone now.

  • UPDATE: So I emailed to check the status:

    hi dear friend
thanks for your letter, but please don't worry .
when we received your payment will send the item out within 3 work days by air mail (because the price is so cheape) .
usually it will take 15-25days . just wait some days with your patience .
    any question, please contact me
    best regards

    and the other seller:

    Friends:
Thank you for your letter, your project has been sent,as sent items, we need time to sort out, I will tell you the

tracking number, you can check online, we use the air packets to send items to you 15 to - 25 days can reach you countries.

    Thank you!

So sounds like they are still thinking about sending the item. If its not here in a month I'll load paypal disputes.

With a few listings still going is anyone else going to buy any?

    • hmm.. looks like it. hopefully they will arrive.

      • ZaFrOoNaLdO, did you buy any of those drives?

        • No. Im tempted to buy coz i really need one.. but this latest development really makes me think the seller wont be posting the item.

    • Sounds like you've been scammed my friend… Best of luck though. Personally I would never wait over a month for a product from some random eBay seller, even more so something that looked dodgy in the first place.

  • +1
    • That was helpful. My plan is if I dont receive it soon I will lodge a n/r dispute or if its fake I will do the same not a NAD dispute

      • Yeah just file an INR dispute instead of SNAD. But that's if the seller didn't send it with a tracking number!

        • by the sounds of the email I got, it looks like it will be airmail with no tracking

  • I've loaded item n/r disputes for both items now as 1 seller has disappeared off my ebay page and the other is getting heaps of negatives.

Paypal stated the seller couldnt respond etc so I had to escalate it to a claim right away.

  • According to paypal, my item has been sent. I even have a tracking number. Will see.

  • As a Chinese-fluent Australian who has personally toured electronics factories in Shenzhen, Dongguan, etc, I must say that this thread is full of the naive and adventurous. Good day sirs.

    • As a person who reads stuff online, you make no sense!

      • Apologies for the inconvenience caused, old bean. In short: I have seen firsthand where products at this price come from. It is not pretty and I believe that people who fall for these scams are naive and adventurous.

        • +1

Ahh no that makes complete sense thank you , totally agree although most havent had the same experience , poor souls :)

      • +2

…really? It made perfect sense to me lol

        • Not everyone thinks the same luckily :)

    • Admit it, what you really wanted to post was, "greedy and stupid".

      • I don't consider naivete as stupidity, just a marked lack of inexperience and appreciation for caveat emptor. To each their own, mate.

        • Or…. we believe in honesty and integrity. Although at this price, stupidity. The whole scam would have been a lot more profitable and believable if they were $80 or so.

  • By buying a couple of these hdds I had in mind that its possibly dodgy but I paid with my cc via paypal so Im covered in any case. PP claims are fairly painless and prompt so worst case is I get a full refund and move on. I've actually gotten 1% cashback on my purchases also!

    • Like to see if it works out like you think

      • if paypal cant retrieve the money, then ill load a cc dispute but I cant see any issue since the tracking info shows no data after > 1 week

        • Doesn't paypal screw you over if you do a cc chargeback on them?

        • That's when u close the account and RUN!
Then of course set up a new one :P

    • A poster on Whirlpool claimed receiving a bangle instead of a hard drive.

      • I received a coin…

        • i must have been lucky, i got two bangles ;)

  • pp frown upon chargebacks however they do process them and it shows in the resolution centre on your acc. They dont take action against you normally if the chargeback is justified. Obviously they wont be happy if you initiate a chargeback from your cc provider before loading a pp claim

  • Paypal finally resolved my dispute regarding these hard drives! Tracking info was provided but records show the items never left China so I got a refund. PHEW!

(epps, what happened. my 1 comment got posted 4 times!)

  • What do you think about this $28.28 2TB usb 3.0 hard disk? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270758… :)

    • +3

Scam - check the feedback and what they have sold previously.

A couple of hundred "tribal bangles" at $2 each (max) costs them nothing to build feedback….
then list 100 x HDD at $28.88 = $3000 and more before they vanish.

Oh, and don't forget the 256GB Kingston drives, Ab Circle Pro and other stuff they've listed. Scam scam scam.

  • So I guess anybody who took the risk and ordered one of these HDD never received the product?
Or someone eventually received a HDD with fake / doctored disc size?

    • Who knows… might be receive nothing, might be a fake item, but also might receive a chunk of rock (but with postal tracking) that is not worth returning. If the seller sets it up cleverly, the buyer will actually lose a Paypal claim even if they were ripped off!

Anyway, even if there was no direct financial loss, the one thing that the buyer DEFINITELY would have lost is valuable matching info of Ebay ID, Full Name and Email Address…. which would already have been sold off to other scammers.

Sometime in the future the Buyer could expect an alarming email from Ebay or Paypal, but it would look perfectly legiotimate because Ebay tells them that only "genuine" emails will address them by their REAL NAME (rather than "dear member"). That email would implore the user to click a link to log into their account abnd rectify something or other. Thus the scammers gain yet another password so they can repeat the process.

  • Are we talking about bargains for the seller or buyer. Really use your brains…… what else can be said

    • Last night when I reported it, the scammer had sold 99 of the WD HHDs off one listing, plus another 40 or so off another. Plus numerous 256GB Kingston USB Drives ($24 each!), Ab Circle Pros and otehr stuff. There were 9 listings in total, and the haul at that time was well over $5000.

Not bad for a few hours work. And people get sucked in because it's so cheap, so that they feel that even if they did lose their money then it's still not such a big deal. Of course, taking $25 off 200 similar-minded suckers is what makes it all worthwhile.
