Cheap Gaming PC for Child Christmas

Hi, looking for a cheap computer for a 12 year old, that I can put in an SSD and a new Gpu and some RAM if needed.

Would this be a good start:

He current plays Minecraft etc, but I think he wants to get into heavier games.

Thanks

SSD: Yes, with 2.5in Sata connection.
GPU: Yes, with only a LP (Low-Profile), HH (Half-height), and PO (PCIE-powered only).

So if you picked up that system and threw in a…
SSD: WD Blue, Crucial MX300, Samsung EVO 850, as a short goto list
GPU: GT 1030, GTX 750 Ti, GTX 1050 Ti, as a short goto list
…that would make for a very good computer for a child/teen, it should stay as relevant to gaming as long as the Xbox One but provide more processing AND gaming experience.

  • Personally I would wait for black Friday sales around 27 November this year or whenever it is this year. If you don't get anything good then the pc you listed is ok but to be honest really there isn't much room for improvement there.

It is very value efficient though so if your thinking of something budgety it is perfect imho.

For me personally minimum 1060 but you can even scrape by with a lot of value with say a 1050 or 1050ti which is even much less in terms of cost.

Don't know why Kangal was down voted / negged as his comment was kind of good unless there was some misinformation with his details with OP's specific buy.

    • He was negged for suggesting a GPU (GT 1030) that Nvidia doesn't even describe as a GPU for gaming and looking at some youtube videos the FPS shows it is NOT fit got gaming above 30 fps this was playing gaming that would certainly;y not be described as "heavier" games.

      • Oh yeah. Didn't even consider the GT 1030 it is a pretty low end card not suitable for any decent amount of gaming at all but the other cards he suggested are alright.

  • Why not buy him the parts and get him into building his own computer. It will make him understand how everything works together.

Tell him he has a budget of say $1000 to build himself a computer (that needs to include screen, mouse, keyboard)

Not a bad setup, but do note that because it is a slim form factor, only low profile GPU's will fit inside the case - so you will be limited to the lower end GPUs (though the 1050ti is still pretty decent)

I would add if funds allow:
    1) 120GB SSD $80
    2) GPU 1050/1050ti low profile $175/$250
    3) Extra 8GB Ram $70

    • Just to expand on GPU pricing…
      GTX 1050ti LP ~$200
      GT 1030 LP $100
      GT 710 LP $52

Using the PICNIC code on eBay for 20% off. For your proposed use, I'd consider 1030 at minimum.

      • Too late to edit ^

The low pro 1050ti 2GB is actually $164, 4GB $212 in current eBay sale.
