Suit Alteration in Sydney

I've got an off-the-rack suit that I've been wearing forever (my first suit). Condition is still good but the size is a bit too big for me. Been thinking of buying a new suit that fits me better, but also tempted at the chance to save a bit of money by altering my current suit and using it for a few more years.

I'm not an expert, but I think the alteration is fairly major. Especially need to slim down the chest area.

If you've paid for a similar service in/around the Sydney area let me know. I live around the east but don't mind a bit of travel for a sure thing.

To give us some context, how much did your suit cost and what's it made of?

    • It's a $500 suit made of wool

  • Unless you've paid thousands for a high quality suit and the material is in good shape I wouldn't put money towards a suit that you're worn forever. A suit is cut to a size and body type. It will not look good if you are making any major adjustments like resizing unless they have to dissemble the suit and redo everything, Even then there's some elements they can't fix.

Dundas Alterations pricelist is pretty indicative of what you'll be up for if you want to go down this route. You may find other places that may be a bit cheaper. Once you need to get a few things done on a jacket and trousers you're up in the hundreds of dollars. A new rack suit on sale from a decent brand can be had for $300-$400.

A tip for when you buy another suit, make sure you get 2 pairs of pants. You wear the pants out much quicker than the jacket.
