Changing Industries

Has anyone managed to get a good job( happy to take a entry level role) in a industry you have no experience/ qualifications in and how did you go about it ?

I've been in hospitality for about 6 years mainly in management roles.
I breifly had a office job in the trade industry but unfortunately had to leave due to severe illness.

I've applied for many jobs in different industries and been successfully obtaining interviews but not successful enough to succeed in obtaining the role .

I am looking into studying next year but this year I had to do a pathways course due to not Been eligible to enter straight into uni and hoping this will help but would like to study something that would benefit my role as I don't have a big interest In one industry

    • Not exactly helpful or really relevant 🤔

  • I worked in hospitality until I was about 23, mostly in mgmt roles as well, before I got sick of it. I took an admin role at a commercial real estate company (paid way better than hospo, and I got to leave work when the sun was still out - such a basic thing to enjoy!) and I ended up liking it and being quite good at it. I worked my way up the ranks and now get paid six figures (managing properties, not sales).

The good thing about working hospitality is that you're well experienced in customer service, a skill that is transferable to a lot of positions.

So to answer your question, yep, had no experience in the industry and just learned on the job.

    • That's what my plan is at the moment I just can't manage to grab that job unfortunately

Leaving when the sun is still out is a small but very enjoyable thing and I defiantly understand that

    • Did you have to get a agents representative certificate ?

      • Not for the admin role, but yes, anything past that you will need it. I did it by correspondence at work with everyone's help/input on my assignments.

        • +1

Okay awesome thankyou it sounds a bit easier getting that way then :)

  • My wife transitioned from hospitality to accounting. She scored her first accounting gig about half way through a cert 4 in Tafe..

  • hospitality for 7 years (2 years of mgmt) and moved to IT act mgmt role - pays more, but oh gee much more stressful

  • I think everyone was in such situations. When I was dropped my previous work I found the job offer at https://essayvikings.com/annotated-bibliography-writing-serv…. And I was something like "what should I do? is it okay for me?". I had no experience in writing at all but I had a real big desire to start a new life. So this really depends on you whether you can handle the new job without any experience or no.

  • I think everyone's Miss understand the question a little bit changing industries is something I really want to do but I'm unable to get a job in another industry (keep getting rejected) I thought coming from hospitality and management roles it might be a little bit easier as their is lots of transferable skills.

Lucky I am in no rush and have full time work up until just after Christmas . I guess I'll just have to keep applying latter in the year and hopefully someone will give me a go

    • Have you had anyone review your resume for you?

      • Not a professional resume writer or anything but have had a few people I know in HR positions review it for me.
I might get someone to review it next year when I start applying for roles again.
