Vacuum Sealer + Bags Recommendation

Do any Ozbargain foodies have any recommendations for a vacuum sealer machine and bags (for use with a sous vide machine).

Thanks very much!

  • I got the aldi one last time they were on sale. Haven't used it yet but for the price they were recommended at the time. :)

  • there's also the kogan one (i bought that as it was decently priced when on sale)

I bought one of the Aldi ones a year or two ago, and have used it a bit since then. It's ok, and not a bad bit of kit for the $$$ - however I've recently upgraded to a Sunbeam Foodsaver VS7800 and it's miles ahead. My friend uses the same model and estimates he's gone through a few hundred metres worth of vacuum rolls, and it still works as well as the day he got it.

I mainly use mine for storing fish and game, and get noticeably less freezer burn than the Aldi one when I store something for a few months. The Aldi/Kogan ones are probably OK if you just plan to use it for sous vide - but it won't hurt to double seal it just to be safe.

As for bags/rolls - I just buy generic rolls from eBay and haven't had any issues.

  • I've got the Kmart one. Took two goes to get one that worked, but it has been running well for over six months using it twice a week. Using eBay rolls and Kmart ones when I run out.

  • For sous vide you need a machine that will work with "wet" food.
The first Aldi one was only "dry" and failed with wet food unless it was frozen first - kind of defeating the purpose.
With fresh game (bunnies) it was a real mess.
The current Aldi one handles "wet" food. Bought one, but I haven't used it yet.
We don't use bags, rather the bulk rolls which we get from Aldi when they are on sale. Never a problem with these.
We also have a Breville sealer that works with sous vide, but it does not fit into the kitchen space at present. It came a free gift with the Breville Kitchen Wizz.

  • I have used a Sunbeam for about 8 years and have just upgraded to a Luvele supreme model. Must say I do love the Luvele, it is so quiet compared to Sunbeam. It also has a wet and a dry setting for sealing so you don't have to freeze food prior to sealing. It has a cancellation button as well. Check out their website for more information, but I highly recommend the Luvele.
