Beginner Turntable and Preamp Suggestions $200-400

My sister bought me a vinyl record and a $100 turntable which skips constantly (was replaced twice - same issues). Im looking to use the refund from the turntable to purchase a decent beginner deck, preamp and maybe even some bookshelf speakers if i can extend my budget a bit.

  • This system sounds great Klipsch R-15PM Turntable Pack

The speakers themselves are currently at a really low price on Kogan. They were priced at $1040 just 7 months ago.

The advantage is that the speakers already have a phono preamp built in. Unfortunately the turntable pack is hard to find in OZ.

    Start with growing a beard.

  • I was planning to start a vinyl hobby but decided not as vinyl records are expensive… But during my research, I've heard the Audio Technica LP120 is a great beginner turntable. I have seen it on sale at around ~$350. Also heard Rega RP1 or Pro-ject Carbon to be good beginner decks.

  • I use a vintage Sonab 85S which I found on eBay some years ago for quite a good price. My amplifier is a NAD 3030e, with Sonab OD-11 and OA-12 speakers.

The Sonab OD-11 are excellent bookshelf speakers.

All of these were purchased on eBay over the years.

  • If you're in the market for an affordable second-hand vintage turntable, I would suggest Gumtree, eBay and garage sales. Failing that, check your local second-hand record shop, though they tend to be more expensive.

  • Your budget is very small. $200-400 is what you'd pay for just the turntable OR amp. I'd suggest two options:

    1) Buy quality. Spend the money on just the turntable (Project Elemental for example). Then save again and grab the amp/speakers.
    or
    2) Buy a blue tooth turntable (Audio Technica AT-LP60BT for example) and get a nice sounding bluetooth speaker such as (Harman/Kardon - Go + Play - Portable Bluetooth Speaker)

    Hi hazmic,

For a beginner on tight budget, this Pioneer turntable is just hard to beat.

    https://www.dicksmith.com.au/da/buy/pioneer-fully-automatic-…

It can be cheaper if you have $20 voucher from DSE or wait for another round of endless discount codes on eBay.

    Good reviews too.

By the way I saw PIONEER PL990 Turntable + SX20 Stereo Receiver AMP + SP-BS22-LR Speakers package for $599 at Costco Docklands a few weeks ago.

    The same as

Once you listened to uncompressed pure stereo, you Will realised how bad the deeply compressed bluetooth sounds are.

    Good luck with your journey.

    Kind regards
