Alternative to Foxtel for My Wife and Kids

So we've had Foxtel for many years and like most, we are sick of paying for average content. We hardly ever watch it now. Already called Foxtel and threatened to cancel which I was happy to do so they reduced the price to $26/month for 12 months, no contract.

Basically, the main show we need to have is Keeping up with the Kardashians as my wife is hooked. The only other requirement is some sort of a kids channel.

I've checked with Netflix and Stan - both don't have the show. Fetch has both but don't want to go onto a contract until we get NBN next year.

Any suggestions will be welcomed.

Just accept the $26/month for foxtel until you get nbn?

    • Cheers for your quick response, yeah I'm thinking that's what we might have to do. Guess it still does the job and the cost is not too bad, I'm just sick of Foxtel in general.

I'm not that tech savy but have family that is so they could help me setup, but was thinking something along the lines of a VPN and Netflix in US to watch it?

      • Fetch might be the easiest but there's always other ways. But for the cost/convenience right now it just makes sense to keep it for now :)

        • Agreed I will keep reading up on the other alternatives. Hopefully, someone else has another suggestion that I can try.

  • kodi?

    • I did have a look at that. It says they don't upload the content and that it comes from the subscribers. Guess I'll have to contact customer care to see if Keeping up with the Kardashians is one of those shows ;)

      • There's no customer care.
Get an android box, or phone, if you don't mind about size.
Install KODI app. Add repositories (add-ons) that have KUWTK, and that's it. There's plenty of guides and tutorials online.

        • Sounds like a great option, even if they don't have the show.

          @billybob1978:
KODI is a front end to enable transparent pirating of shows.
It works very well if you set it up correctly, but needs a bit of TLC every now and again.
Since it is $300 a year less than your Foxtel bill, lots of people find it a good option, but if you are daunted by the idea of setting up a VPN to watch US netflix, it probably isn't for you.
You can try it out on a PC or Android deice you already own, and decide if it does what you want. If it does, you are likely to then want to buy an Android TV box or media centre pc to get the most out of it.

  • Optus Cable with FetchTV included has most channels on Foxtel Inc sport. Bundle with Cable or NBN for $80

$80 a month only gets you one fetch tv channel and sport

      • Yup your right they changed it to 94/month. When I signed up it was 80. You get 10 channel pack not 1 though. UPGRADE TO THE ULTIMATE PACK WITH 45+ CHANNELS FOR AN EXTRA $14 P/M

        • For $80 i would pull the trigger. I might give them a call and see what they can do

        • @chumlee: Yeah tell them you'd be willing to sign up plan etc and they will do a deal. Try facebook too.

Hayu is available as a stand alone month to month service like Netflix and they offer KUWTK - $6 a month

    • I'm actually a little confused about netflicks, I never seem to get billed?

      • At all? Netflix direct debit from my account. Keeping an eye on your account?

        • My bank?? So I'm racking up a bill??

        • @Slippery Fish: When you signed up for Netflix, you would have given them your credit card details. Netflix will debit an amount from your card on a monthly basis.

To check your billing details, click on this link:

… then click on "Billing Details"

    • Awesome thanks, sounds just like what we need. Would I need an Android TV box or media player to view it on the TV?

      • +1

According to their support site it should work via Chromecast or AppleTV, using an Android based TV box should work by side loading
        the app.

        • Perfect thanks, will have to test that on the Apple TV.

Edit: is that the latest Apple TV or will the old series work?

Tell the wife that it's a evil show rotting her brain and you just cannot do it any more! She either keeps up with you and the kids, or them. :P prob not worth ending the family but my lord I hate that show…

His getting a good deal already. Optus TV Foxtel is only $1 cheaper at 25/month.

Fetch has both but don't want to go onto a contract until we get NBN next year.

You can buy fetch outright….. The mighty is $399, then you're not on a contract for the box or channels etc.

  • Option 1: Call Foxtel, say 'Cancellations', ask for their $10 mini pack which gives you 10 channels and the iQ functionality for $10 per month. You can have this pack for a maximum of 12 months. Included channels:

    TVH!ts
    UKTV
    Arena
    Lifestyle
    FOX8
    Fox Sports News
    Sky News
    History Channel
    Nickelodeon
    [V]Hits

The main downside is no HD, though I am sure this isn't needed for the Kardashians.

Option 2: Purchase a Fetch TV Mini for $150 and get the relevant channel packs.

Option 3: Purchase a Mi Box 3 for around $100 and install Kodi / Covenant

    • Option 1 would be the easiest thanks for the suggestions. Do you know if they can include channel E and the kids channel (can't remember the name of it) in that?

Yeah you are right we don't really need HD for what we will be watching.

They aren't able to make any changes to the pack, so you wouldn't be able to have those channels with this pack.

  • itunes has it also
