The Pirate Bay Bitcoin Mining

I recently read that The Pirate Bay added a Javascript-based bitcoin miner on some of their pages. They claim it's a trial to generate enough revenue to remove the ads, but users (including power-users and moderators) are not happy to say the least. What are your thoughts on this? Any idea how to block it? Just using NoScript plug-in?

I think the concept is a great idea, but it seems very hidden, maybe tell the users? An option to switch between seeing ads and running a miner?

Most of TPB users run adblock so their ad revenue is very low.

  • I think that's super clever… Don't have a problem with it provided it stops mining when I leave the page.

Not that I'm ever on TPB….
Or even know what it is…
It's "impossible" to access now anyway…

    • If you were to visit this ahmmm, webpage, how long would it be for? 15 seconds? Is it worth it?

That was kinda my thought… cause that's about the timeframe I'd be on on there too if I even knew what the site did…
But I guess a heap of people load up the site then leave it running while their Linux ISO downloads to completion.

  • If implemented right I can't see a problem, but it seems some people have had their CPU go to 100% usage from it which isn't acceptable.

      who cares?
You are only on the page long enough to add to bittorrent which from the looks of this video i'd be in an closed the page before it would even max my cpu.

    • I might have to stop using piratebay now and spend $30 on the DVD.

      • Get BluRay at least. DVD is so yesteryear :)

    • It's funny, the author of the video think it's ok for him to steal other people's content on piratebay, and it's NOT ok for the piratebay to steal his CPU.

I wonder did he call up HBO, and tell them, "Hey, I am going to download your Game of Thrones from TPB. Press 1 to Agree."

  • I just got an email from Windscribe basically asking me to offer up my CPU in exchange for some bandwidth or free subscription.

"using your CPU", and "offer up my CPU".

Will this coin mining feature also use up a lot of my 4G bandwidth? Anyone know.
I often never stay on a TPB page for 10+ minutes so could cost a lot of bandwidth.
