Pet Insurance - Which One for General Cover?

Hi All

Could anyone recommend me a good pet insurance company. I'm currently paying $800-900 for just basic "classic" cover from PetPlan and it is just going up every year.

I have a spoodle, 5yo and no pre-existing conditions. He may get the odd ear infection here and there but nothing too major. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Why not throw that $800-900 in a savings account every year?

Everytime I've looked into pet insurance, what gets paid out/covered doesn't seem worth the expense. I reckon I'm still ahead of whatever premium I would have been charged, and that has included an ER visit, and a chronic condition that has developed.

      This ^

We had pet insurance for a year, they hardly covered anything, connected heaps of stuff to 'pre-existing conditions'. We cancelled it and I've just set up for a small amount of my pay to go into a separate savings account just for the dog.

If only get pet insurance if the animal was a baby.

"its cheaper to replace the pet"

    • The maths doesn't add up at all putting money into an account.

Get insurance at 8 weeks for a puppy. Don't claim first 30 days. Pretty much nothing then will be pre existing. I have already gotten back more then I paid last year. And no my premiums didn't increase much. Like 1 dollar a fortnight.

Friend of mine his lab has had 2 knee surgeries. Added up to 6k so far from memory. He has gotten full 80% back. And all future treatments too are covered.

That's 4800. That's many years of putting money aside to cover that same amount.

I am with pet insurance Australia. Roughly 22 a fortnight for full comprehensive coverage.

  • Bow Wow Meow has been terrific for me. Pretty annoyed they've just introduced a cap of $300 a year for all consultations, but I've currently got a Golden Retriever we've spent $10k on so far. Probably need to spend another $15k on full hip replacements.. 80% just goes into my account after claim made.

One of the most un-necessary purchases is pet insurance.

When we needed the services of a vet, the bill was approx $600.00

Most vets offer payment plans for expensive bills. so rather than paying weekly for insurance, we simply paid weekly / monthly or what ever the terms may be if and when an issue does come up.

If it never happens, then all the money stays in our bank accounts :)

  • They are mostly all just a re-sell of the hollard pet insurance. I have a policy for my Mastiff through HCF, various knee operations and lump etc and its about even over 6 years. Most have a cut off where you have to get insurance before 8 years of age, as they get older more issues, more potential claims.

Holy crap, the most my kids are ever going to get is a gold fish.

  • Wow, didn't know pet insurance was that expensive…
