New CPU... should I wait?

Want to get the current Intel i7 7700k bx806771700k CPU and the eBay deals are playing (minus the mark up)

Should I wait it out for the price to drop (until coffee lake comes out?) Or take it now, anyone have an idea of prices may drop?

Thank you.

  • What do you want to do with it? Productivity tasks (Photoshop, Video edit, transcoding) or gaming?

    If productivity = true
    buy Ryzen now

    elif Gaming
    buy Intel Kaby Lake

    elif Gaming and Productivity
    Wait for Coffee Lake.

    • Gaming and thank you! Hopefully not a long wait haha. I've got all parts already minus CPU, 32 inch monitor (still looking) and Ram.

      • Depending on what GPU you have you might not need a beefy Core i7. Hyperthreading doesn't benefit games much (or at all) instead place more importance on GPU.

If you're running a 1060 / 1070 even something mainstream like a Core i5 7500 would still be an OK fit. Current gen Core i7's still only have 4 cores, you'd need to wait for Coffee Lake to see an increase in core count.

        • Ahh okay, thank you for the info! I've bought a 1080ti, so do you reckon I should stick or wait for the new one? I'm more with having the PC as a long term use (current setup is 3-4 years old but due for a refresh lol)

        • @HereYeeHereYee:

Quad core CPU's in the high end category are starting to become 'mid end'.

I think it seems a little short sighted to be spending upwards of $350 on a KabyLake Quad core CPU when
          a) Ryzen has beaten intel to the punch with hexa cores and
          b) Coffee Lake is coming next year.
          c) You can't upgrade the CPU to a Coffee Lake gen unless you fork out extra cash for a new motherboard, since it's not compatible.

My suggestion is to wait to buy coffee lake, since ryzen would bottleneck a GTX 1080, though if you are impatient you could buy Kaby Lake and enjoy just about the same level of performance in current-gen games. I doubt most titles need anything more powerful than a 4ghz Oc'ed intel CPU.

I'd be productive while gaming with a lake of coffee… ;P

Although Moore's law is long term, it kinda applies to technology overall. In 6 months time, you'll get something 6 months better.

If you need something, get it, if you dont - then hold out.

    • I have the 'just bought this few days ago at this price damnit' OzBargain mentality :')
