Can You Transfer a Flight to Someone Else?

Hey guys,

I was able to book a flight via this deal @ $179 OCT 4-11 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/322824) however I was not able to get a visa here since I am Canadian and my Aussie visa expires within the 6 months time frame.

I am wondering if I could transfer the flight to someone else as its an awesome deal and I am sure either one of my friends or one of you guys would like to take it over. I did buy insurance so I should be able to get my money back, but its such a great deal I don't want anyone to miss out!It really sucks as I really wanted to go to Shanghai, its such a cheap trip, the frequent flyer points themselves almost make this deal, not to mention miles travelled bonuses.

Kind regards,

CanadianBeaver

Yes you can once you pay the applicable fee. However, the only thing is that you might find that it's not such a great deal after that!

Yep…. There will be a name change fee, can be anything from $80 to $200 or more.

One way to find out, call the airline and ask!!!

Or at least go the airline website, manage booking and see if you can do a name change there. It will show you the costs.

  • it also depends what type and class of ticket you bought

Domestic flights you can normally be sneaky if you're the same sex as the ticket booking name, you check-in online, no baggage and generally don't talk to counter staff who might ask for ID.

International flights you pay the fees required. Security and Passport checks won't let you bypass this one - and for good reason!

      What local lives don't matter?

  • Just checked online, looks like they dont let you change the name at all !!!

Ticket is V class which means theres a 50% cancellation fee. Hopefully insurance covers the rest! thanks guys for your help!!!

Expensive lesson, but glad i learned it with a cheap flight ahaha.

You are lucky it is only 50%. A lot of airlines promo fares are 100% cancellation charge!

    • I've wondered why airlines have a cancellation or no-show fee. If you don't take the flight, you've already lost money on the airfare you've paid for, so why do they need to charge you an extra fee?

I think you misunderstand. You dont pay more. You just only get 50% back.

  • As mentioned it depends on the T&Cs of the ticket class. There are no fixed rules. Airlines are needlessly predatory when it comes to change fees, especially given that they have ample time to resell the ticket.
