HP Folio 13 with failing SSD - Is It Worth Fixing?

Hey all,

Have a neighbour with a HP Folio 13-1016tu.

i3/4GB/128GB failing mSSD.

The only one I can find to replace is the 256GB version for $139.

However, I cannot get the unit to create recovery media & cannot find out online if I can utilize a generic Win7 to do so & activate with it's key.

If I can't, then they are looking at drive + media + my time to dissasemble/reassemble (this one can be a bear) + reinstall, + driver install + updates. Then there's the "battery-age" issue….

They're looking at about $320, if I set a flat-rate.

IYHO, is this worth it or should I send them to purchase something new? I hate to see things tossed in the landfill, but they may prefer new. However, this unit had very good reviews, so….

Ta

PS: one of two USB are stuffed, physically, so they're to using a hub.

I've used my Win7 Pro OEM disc on about 4 different laptops with their respective licences, never had an issue. Its arguably much better because theres no bloat - then just get the drivers from HPs website. If you are charging them for IT services how do you not know this?

Tell them to sell their current one as is, maybe $100 and to buy a new one. With the amount you're charging for the repair and $50-100 from the old laptop sale i'm pretty sure they could buy something similar to what they had. You should also ask them about what they use it for and if a chromebook is something that would suit them.

  • I have the folio, its a really good machine. Love the size and the backlit keypad. But I only spent 500 on itnew

  • $360 with POWER20 code, would score you a Haswell 4th generation Dell Latitude E6440 business laptop

Dell Latitude E6430 Core i5-3320m would be $239 dollars, 3rd generation.

Given the repair costs of $300, I would rather just buy the Dell Latitude then sell off the old Folio.

If I'm not mistaken, the HP Folio 13-1016tu is a 2nd generation Core Series laptop right? If that's the case, that laptop is too old to be considering repairs now. You could buy a Haswell machine for the repair costs quoted.

My Elitebook Folio 940M is $320 last year and it came with 8GB of RAM, Core i7 Haswell, backlit KB, SSD, and even the port replicator dock. I did have to replace the keyboard which costs me $22 dollars to do.

  • Thanks all.

I'm just one who hates to add to landfills (REALLY hates it)…but thought as much.

@Presence, thank you. I do know that in most cases a license simply installs. But I've also had weird things in non-standard SSD's where there's some sort of hidden/inaccessible boot area which requires a factory disk. If you haven't, happy for you. I've hit this, myself, before. So you know.

RE: "sell their's for $100"— fat chance. 2nd-hand sites want YOU to pay THEM. And that's if they can be bothered to go through the BS of nigglers.

Thanks, everyone. Appreciated very much. You're tops!

    :)
