Why Do You or Don't You Recycle Your Old Mobile Phone?

Hi Ozbargainers! Long time fan, first time forum poster!

I'm basically curious - we all know the inherent benefits of recycling to the environment, yet so few of us choose to recycle our old phones and instead hold onto them - even when they're broken or have no resell value. If you do or have recycled an old phone, what got you over the line? If you don't or haven't, what are your reasons or concerns? I'm interested to hear your views!

DISCLAIMER:

I should point out that I'm currently running an awareness campaign for the recycling, reselling and repurposing of old mobile phones. If you're interested in my campaign, any support is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I give my old phones to my dad to use.

    1st phone: Dad broke it.

    2nd phone: Dad lost it.

Let's see what happens with the 3rd.

    • Come back to this post to let us know :)

    • Dad eats it

I have managed to re-purpose 2 of the old phones. One as a Dashcam for my car and another as a camera for my daughter who is too young to have her own phone.
I am paranoid of recycling anything with personal data (computers, phones). Maybe I watch too many youtube videos of unscrupulous individuals stealing data from old storage devices.
Not sure if I should stop watching these videos to get over my paranoia OR stop hoarding my storage devices :)

    • You've summed up the situation perfectly!

I still use my Nexus One as a permanent OBD2 dashboard in my van. Gives me info I don't get on the normal dash and gives alerts if coolant temps get too high etc. Being AMOLED the screen is good at night too.

I keep them. Privacy. Can't people get data off them?

  • I always hand down my phone to my parents. My Dad is still rocking a iPhone 3GS!

  • We usually pass on our old phones to my in laws. A couple of times we've sold an old phone. We currently have an old HTC One as a backup. My wife used it for a couple of months when her Note 2 finally died and she was waiting for the Note 8. Now I might use it as a screen for my Sony Action Cam.

We've never just chucked a phone in the bin. Worst case, recycle it as e-waste.

  • I rarely had 2 phones at the same time! I really wait till one is dead before buying a new one!
