Can This Be Done? Swapping Telstra Pre-Paid Plans from One Person to Another

My son is currently on a $30 Telstra Prepaid Freedom Plus plan where we can use the credit on Google Play for renting movies.

I am currently on the $40 Telstra Pre-Paid Plus plan, no Google Play credit for me.

My son wants to join Optus but I don't want to let go of the Freedom Plus plan (nor pay $30 once he leaves), is it possible that I take up his plan without taking his phone number? Or is there a way to transfer that plan to me?

No - Freedom Plus is a legacy product so once your son takes his number to Optus, (which means he is leaving the Freedom Plus plan), there's no going back.

There's no way for you to transfer your number into his account.

Yes you can transfer the Freedom Plus to your account. Except that you will lose one of the numbers, as you can't leave a plan without number. You will lose the number you are 'overwriting' into the Freedom Plus plan.

Have done it twice without issues with LiveChat/132200. However, check with Telstra if you still can keep his number before he ports to Optus, and at the same time, keep the Freedom Plus.

    All the best.

It can be done, it isn't easy though and requires multiple phone calls. Here's a step by step list:

    • Activate 2x $2 SIM (We'll call them SIM A & SIM B respectively)
    • Transfer ownership of the freedom plus number to yourself
    • Call Telstra on the Prepaid team (must call and must be the prepaid team) and tell them you want to put the number from SIM A onto the Freedom Plus SIM. SIM A will be deactivated and the number it had will be on the Freedom Plus SIM. Your son's number will be put into quarantine.
    • Ring up Telstra again and ask them to take your sons number out of quarantine and place it on SIM B. The number on SIM B will then go into quarantine and your sons number will be on SIM B.
    • Port out the number to Optus.

It's complicated but the Freedom Plus offer is so good it's worth putting in the effort.

    • Thanks.

Just to clarify though, will my son lose his number when he joins Optus? Will I keep my existing number?

  • Ok, i actually have my son's number under my account but confused about the next step.

I have bought the 2 x $2 SIMs and activated them under my account also.

    @realfancyman, you said:

I am not sure how I end up with the Freedom Plus plan on my own number though?

Can I clarify, are you trying to get freedom plus on an existing service, or want a new number with F+?

  • Bring over to an existing service. I'd like to take over his F+ but keep my existing number somehow.

Worst case would be to keep the plan but allow him to port keeping his number.

    • Anyone?
