For Those to Whom Everything out of Ordinary Seems Scam

So I got a call today from ebay as this is their 18th birthday year and they were giving away $20 voucher.I get a call from ‭02 8288 0000‬, I disconnect it the first time. Then I get call back again. The woman on the other side

Customer service: Hi we are from ebay, are you “username”?

Me: yes I am

Customer service: we are giving away $20 ebay voucher to those who have signed up this year on our 18th birthday. Would you like us to send a voucher through email.

Me: yes, why not? Is there any minimum spend?

Customer service: none!

Me: thanks, bye!

Me: checks email and tries applying coupon code at checkout

It works!

Me: posts deal on ozbargain so others don’t miss on a call like I was going to

You did get scammed, the time it took on the call, they could of just emailed you and not called you.

    • Umm I wot? They couldn’t have just emailed me if they wanted to confirm if this mobile number is genuine and belongs to the account owner

    i agree

  • The world is out to get us hard werrrkin cobbaz. It is all the murdocks fault ya know.

    Stop scammin us.

  • When I clicked on that post I saw a message saying unpublished because "deal is unavailable", or words to that effect. Might the word TARGETED in the title have prevented that?

  • Please note that OP's deal — $20 Voucher for Users Who Registered This Year @ eBay wasn't removed by the moderators as a suspicious scam. It was removed as it's an Unobtainable Deal.

    • eBay has to make a call to account holder with mobile phone number registered to offer the $20 discount coupon.
    • There is no way for another user to "initiate" the deal, whether targeted or not.

Getting offered a discount by a merchant where other users have no way to obtain might be a good deal to you but unobtainable for others, thus not a deal to be shared on OzBargain.

    • Fair call.

    • My point of this post isn’t the reason it got removed but the comments it got while it was up and those who reported it as scam etc, who might have thought that they got successful with their agenda

      • You have "Mods: Deal Removed" directly underneath OzBargain calling spam/phishing in your post above, which implies the moderator removed the deal directly as the result.

If your point is that they are actually NOT correlated, please make it explicit.

        • I have added a link to post so anyone can follow link to definition of unobtainable deal.

  • The Nigerians on the phone talking to you just wanted to get you to talk so they can use your voice for phone banking

    • I had nothing real connected to the account even the mobile number is for spammy calls. So tell me again where did they want to phone bank?

      • It's a joke Ned Flanders

        • Yes a joke, for now…

        • You're on fire today Mr Comedian.

  • Yes sometimes good things happen. Kinda weird though don't you think?
I agree with you though that it's premature to jump to the conclusion that it's a scam. Some people are so negative
