ISO: Electronic drugs for the sensor, the higher the more sensitive it is to light (brighter) but you risk graininess.
Shutter speed: How fast your electronic eye blinks, the faster, the better for fast moving subjects but due to less time for light to reach the sensor, you will get a darker image.
Aperture: How big the hole, or F number. The lower the F number, the larger the hole, the more light you have. But larger hole means a thinner invisible wall-of-things-in-focus, also known as depth of field.

Go manual, you need a high shutter speed (1/500 maybe), balance it back with ISO, and force your aperture (F number) as large as possible.

    70-300mm Non VR
Most likely will need that one unless you're very close.
Longer zooms usually have a lower F number/Aperture, so you'll need to bump up ISO a little bit (unless it's very bright).

Unless your camera has blazing fast autofocus, I recommend manually focusing to where the car is going to come around, pre-focus on that spot (switch to autofocus first, then once focus lock is done, switch to manual).
Reason why this may help is so your camera doesn't even try to autofocus.

There may be a "Sports" mode on your camera too.
Mainly for non-blurry you NEED fast shutter speed.
Some cameras it's called Tv where it's Shutter Speed priority, i.e. you choose shutter speed, and camera will try and adjust ISO and aperture for you.
However usually with the auto modes, they will always bump up the ISO, that's why it's best to play around with the 3 settings until it's good.

what setting numbers you got yours on

Depends on your camera, lens that you use and lighting conditions

I'm going to hazard a guess you have the
        Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G

The largest aperture it can operate is F 4.5 at 70MM
Then it closes to 6.3 at 300MM
That's how you read it, regardless if yours is the above or not.

        F4.5 is pretty small.

I'm not sure how close or far you are away to the car or whether the sun is shining harshly and brightly, or you have thin or thick clouds.

        Try ISO 1600
        1/500
F6.3 (that's the largest it will go at 300MM)
        @300MM (full zoomed in)

If it's too dark, then try ISO 3200 or halve the speed to 1/250.
ISO 1600 to ISO 3200 will double the light, but potentially have more graininess or "noise" into the image.
Halving the speed will again double the light (double the time), but you risk a blurry photo if the shutter speed is not fast enough to freeze the action.

If it's too bright, then half the ISO to ISO 800.

My suggested settings are educated guessing and checking because I have no clue where you're shooting, what the light is.
Do you have at least one photo with the EXIF data as a sample? (it will say what the camera settings were)
