Advice for A Budget Christmas Holiday

Dear all fellow Ozbargainers,

We would like to have some advice from you guys for this year Christmas holidays.
Holiday season is coming and we haven’t decided where to go this year, therefore need some advice/suggestion from you guys.

  • Travel time: 5-6 days is ok, any time from 22nd Dec to 5th Jan (we try to avoid Chirstmas eve)
  • Local or overseas is ok (we’re from Melbourne) – I know it’s hard to travel overseas with this budget during this time
  • Budget (most important thing): as low as possible, under $2000 including air tickets if possible
  • No Sydney, Tasmania areas (we went there last year)

A few options we’re considering:
- 5 – 6 days in Gold Coast QLD ( around $550 for air tickets)
- Interstate road trip and camping (we did a lot of road trips recently)
- Stay at home, relax and day trips around Melbourne

Looking forward to some new ideas. Thank you in advance.

Budget (most important thing): as low as possible,

    then this

Stay at home, relax and day trips around Melbourne

    • Well that's the last option…

I think the roadtrip and camping might be your best option - the chaos and cost of flying at that time for such a short holiday probably isn't worth it. Maybe head east to Lakes Entrance or up to NSW Sapphire Coast (Merimbula region) would be nice.

Alternatively (and much riskier) is to try something like imoova.com with motorhome relocations. A lot of interesting places you could head to but in summer - gonna be damn hot.

Camping in summer away from the coast is great, but you need to find a nice river or lake.
By the coast is too busy.
I have a friend that raves about the snowy mountains in summer - that would be in your budget if you are interested in hiking, swimming, mountain biking etc.

    • Although we're not into skiing and stuffs but that's a good advice, thank you.

      • It isn't snowy in summer, just a bit cooler than than other places and good for bush activities.

You could road trip it all the way to Gold Coast? Much cheaper than flying (especially at that time), plus no need for car rental at other end. And if the road trip adds an extra 4 days to 6 in the Goldie, it will still fit within your dates of 22nd to 5th.

    • We did a road trip from Melbourne to Sydney 2 years ago along the coastal, stopping by Eden, Huskisson, Newcastle… that was fun but from Melbourne to QLD is quite a lot of driving though, especially when you head back to Melbourne after the trip… We also considering flying to Sydney then hire a car to do road trip to QLD though.
We're not going to travel all the way from 22nd to the 5th, maybe a week maximum.

      • Yeah. I would say Melb - QLD would make a car of unhappy people… unless you have a larger SUV that would give everyone some room.

I can't help much but I would be entering as many comps until your holiday as well…

Pohnpei from Brisbane using air Niugini, is 700 return, but it's always that price. Tiger airlines to Brisbane

This is a unique place imho, and if that is budget for you, I think it's a good place to visit.

Look at imoova and try tee up a one way car rental, and fly back.

Melbourne to Adelaide would be good

Sorry for the posts, but if you like cricket why not just watch the ashes at home and plough through some beer, or combine this with camping in snowy mountains

I wouldn't go with anymore than 2-3 days in GC. Keep in mind the theme parks can cost around $70-80 pp, so if you're going to DW and MW then thats a fair chunk gone if you have 4-5 people going.

If you can go without theme parks, then you could probably hire a car and look around Brisbane and Sunshine Coast within budget. You'll just have to get accom in motels that aren't in the CBD.

  • How many people in the family?
    Wilsons Promontory never disappoints.

    Hi guys,
We decided to go for a short road trip around Victoria or Adelaide. Thanks for all your suggestions. Hope everyone will enjoy their own plans during the holiday seasons. Cheers

  • China? Greatplace to travel to. Accomodation and food etc are inexpensive. It will be winter but winter in china is not so bad depending on where you go.

  • If you decide to come up to the Gold Coast and there is only two of you; send me a inbox or reply. I will be away for that period but looking at renting out my room for a period to cover expenses.
It's in the heart of the GC and absolute beach front with full ocean views. Will rent it cheap only to cover rent costs

  • And there's plenty of great deals available for flights at the moment to
