Kitchen Cupboard Door (Wrap) Repair

Hi all,

Need some advice on repairing the kitchen cupboard door as shown in the links. It's a rental house and we are moving out next month and want to get them fixed.

The only way I can think of is replacing the door, but also worrying about the colour won't match with other doors.

Could anyone please advise what options do I have? Thanks!

Edit 2:
The wrap is out of its shape. They are caused by steam (from the kettle) and another one water & heat gun (we try to fix it using a heat gun but made it worse).

  • looks like a bit of glue can do the job. youtube is full of videos on how-to-fix these things.

  • You have to remove the strip and replace it with this: https://www.bunnings.com.au/custompine-21mm-x-10m-white-iron…

Basically just iron it on, cut off excess with a stanley knife and then sand paper off the rough edges.

The colour will probably not match exactly, but won't be very obvious.

    • Thanks for advising.

I think my other question is, how do I only remove the top and before putting the strip on?

      • Oh ok, in this case, my suggestion is probably not the best idea. How stiff is the covering? If it is not too stiff, maybe glue it back like @DarthAntz suggested. Depending on the glue you use, you may want to use masking tape to tape the edges to stop getting glue on the covering.

        • It's pretty stiff. And because it's caused by hot steam (used to have a kettle under that cupboard), it is out of shape.

Another one is caused by water (and heat gun). It started with water then my housemate tried to fix it using a heat gun and made it worse.

        • @jsuen: Heatguns are not a great idea as they get too hot. You could take off the cabinet door and try flattening out the covering using an iron on low setting, just enough to make it soft and pliable. Note: there is a good chance you may make things worse. :)

If that doesn't work, measure the distance between the top and bottom hinge. If it is the same, see if you can turn the cabinet door upside down and swap sides. You might pass your final inspection that way. Lol.

        • @jsuen: i'd be cutting along the edge (front + bottom). adding that strip underneath. buying a small tin of matching cream paint and painting the edge/corner to blend. it will be neater and smoother.

  • +1

Wouldn't this be considered wear and tear and consequently the landlords responsibility? (genuine question).

    • I don't know if that's a wear and tear. Maybe I will look it up. Just want to be nice because I know I wouldn't be happy to see it if I were the landlord.

  • Most vinyl wrapped doors are sensitive to heat and moisture, I don't think it's the tenant's issue if the doors were already peeling when you moved in unless you caused damage on the doors like hitting it with a knife or hammer. Do you have photos of the kitchen when you moved in? I had to replace all the peeling doors (non-Ikea) around the gas cooktop with Ikea stainless steel doors before tenants moved in and after almost 5 years they are still fine:
