My Experience Churning ISP on NBN (FTTN)

Hi all,

Just churned over to Aussie Broadband from Belong this morning. The information I received was to expect a downtime of up to 48 hours. The cutover date is scheduled for today. This morning my internet went down and I sort of expected some downtime. I checked the internet half and hour later, and it was back up already on a new IP address. It was all pretty painless.

Also, the good thing was, I didn't need to replace my modem. The Belong modem automatically reconnected without me having to do anything. Preliminary speed tests show that there wasn't much difference between what I was getting. to be fair, it is non-peak period at the moment. Hopefully it makes a difference during peak hours.

  • Good to hear. AB seem to be doing a pretty good job in a market filled with woeful businesses.

Let us know if there's any difference in peak times.

  • How much are you paying with AB now?

  • The Belong modem automatically reconnected without me having to do anything.

This works cause both ISPs use DHCP without authentication (ABB does for sure).
Some ISP's (usually resellers) use PPPoE, in which case you would need to make changes to your modem in order to reconnect.

    • Yea, I checked this page before I decided to take the chance and see if the Belong modem works. http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/fttn_registered_modem_router

Would you know if it makes a difference to my speed if I move to a provider with PPPOE?

      • Any NBN-FttN certified modem will work* for all NBN ISPs.. just some ISP's require authentication (*some even require VLAN tagging, in which case, the modem also has to support VLAN tagging)

It will make no difference to the speed of your connection what connection protocol they use, it's just authentication.
The one potential issue with DHCP connections is if an NBN tech stuffs up and connects your line to someone else's pair on the pillar you may connect to THEIR service and vice versa! Because there's no authentication, it's a small but real risk and you might never know until they stop paying their bill and your service randomly stops!!

    • This works cause both ISPs use DHCP without authentication

Duh feck … doesn't that leave them open to people stealing their service?

      • Yup.. kinda does, if a line is incorrectly transpositioned as above.

      • Have no idea if this is true, but I remember reading somewhere that a guy started renting a new apartment unit, plugged in his modem and had free NBN internet since the last tenant must not have disconnected yet? No idea if true, but now it makes sense to me if it doesn't use authentication.

        • I've seen the same thread here
