Christmas at Cairns, Anything to Do on 25th?

Hi bargainers,
My family is planning to go to Cairns in the last week of December. None of us or our friends have been there during Christmas time, so not sure if everything will be closed on the Christmas Day? What about 26th? We are not interested in shopping centers but tourists spots, sight viewing and anything that kids can enjoy. Thanks very much in advance.

Generally Christmas Day is the only day that most places close up shop. I'm sure there would be plenty of restaurants and hotels putting on a lunch - for which you would need to reserve a place. I reckon you should start planning on nothing being open and just have a lazy day to yourself.

    Ideas for Cairns:
    Visit a banana plantation.
See the sugarCane Factory (MSF Sugar).
    Search for a Cassowary.
    Go on a Crocodile Adventure.
    Use the Skyrail.
    Walk through Daintree national park.
    View the Great Barrier Reef.

Absolutely, OP should visit a natural lake. There is one at Lake Barrine Volcanic Crater which has a nice little cafe and so it's good for a lunch break.

At least that's what I did. Although, it's difficult to remember what I did in Cairns as it was more of a northern Queensland tour.

Will you have a car? Even though most shops/restaurants will be closed on Xmas/Boxing Day you can do some sight seeing
    around the local area.

    A car will let you:

Drive to Port Douglas/Mossman Gorge. (beautiful drive north along the coast).
Explore Crystal Cascades (local swimming spot - river coming down from the mountains so no crocs).
Drive to Josephine Falls (another swimming spot but further away).
Check out the beaches to the north of Cairns (Trinity beach and Palm cove being the best in my opinion).

    No car -

The lagoon on the Esplanade will still be open for a swim and if you buy in advance you could take advantage
of the free BBQs. (free BBQ's at the northern beaches as well).

For little kids there is a free water playground on the Esplanade (Muddies) and two non-water playgounds at either end of the
    Esplanade.

Try out the "Red Arrow" bushwalk.

Send me a PM if you want anything clarified (I live in Cairns).

  • Thanks very much! Sounds like plenty to do on xmas day! Looking forward to Cairns!

  • so not sure if everything will be closed on the Christmas Day?

A picnic in the botanical gardens would probably go down well otherwise definitely check out some of the beaches. My personal favourite is Yorkey's Knob but Ellis beach further north past Palm Cove is also great.

  • There are a lot of farmers and according to TV they are lonely.

    So there's an option.

  • Just checked, no public bus servcie on xmas day. Taxis and uber will be your choices
if you are without a car.
