Router suggestion

Hi All-
I connect Netflix on my Mi box to US VPN by setting USA DNS on the router as there is no configuration on the mi box to connect to specific DNS and it needs to be done on the router . Due to this all the devises get routed to this DNS by default which I Would like to stop .

Is there any router available where I can have multiple dns setting where I can connect few devices to VPN enabled and other to default . Preferably looking for a NBN ready though currently on ADSL2 connection
Thanks in advance

  • Its definitely not easy to setup complex dns settings, but you can do it in AdvancedTomato firmware, which is available for a few consumer routers. I use this to provide my apple TV with regular ISP DNS while the rest of the house gets sent to OpenDNS, which otherwise slows down the apple TV content loading dramatically.

DNS is different from VPN. Its likely you could do a VLAN (again, not easy) for allocating some devices to VPN, but this would probably require you to have all those devices using a dedicated lan port or a dedicated Wifi band.

  • +1

you setup two rooter piggyback ok

  • Just get a second VPN capable router and connect only the devices you want to pass through VPN to it.

  • Put your existing router as passthrough to an EdgerouterX, Edgerouter establishing the VPN, configure dnsmasq for DNS to send specific domains to your VPN. When you get NBN just ditch the ADSL router. Could use a Pi for VPN and dnsmasq, but it will have a lot less throughput. All do-able, nothing simple.
