Which NAS?

No i am not referring to the Illmatic,

I need a NAS that my wife can back up her photos to that syncs to one drive.

What is the cheapest and best option that i can set and forget in the corner?

I tried My Cloud but apparently it doesn't back up. Ideally i wouldn't want to spend over 250 bucks.

Thanks :)

"Ideally i wouldn't want to spend over 250 bucks"

that is almost impossible. unless 2 bays (limited options to backup) or maybe DIY style NAS.
but when you add HDDs, might go over 250

  • With this deal you can get the 2 bay QNAP NAS and other goodies for $299.

    • Yes but no HDDs in them.

      • 1tb HDD is an option in Group B.

        • True, I didn't see that, my apologies. I'm still a bit skeptical about the Seagate base range HDDs, might just be a bit of carry over from their older version ones that had a high failure rate.

I think I still prefer my option that I have post below, that way the OP gets a true NAS HDD.

  • For set and forget, and backup AND for that budget you should forget about a NAS and look at this option instead.

Get a HDD like this, http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Western-Digital-WD-Red-3TB-3-5-SA… , which with 20% off sale is $138.40, then buy an enclosure like this, http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Volans-UE35-Aluminium-3-5-SATA-US… which is $31.20 , so total of $169.60.

Then get this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/333453, great program, I started running it yesterday. Then set up 2 SCHEDULED backups. First one backs up all her photos to her HDD plugged into her computer, second one backs them all up to OneDrive.

This way you have a true NAS HDD, something a cheap HDD built in "NAS" won't have, plus it is set and forget, plus you can take the HDD with you whenever you want and plug it into any computer. Plus if you ever want to upgrade to a true NAS, you already have a HDD.

    • Hmm i like this but i want this to run automatically. She uses a laptop and won't ever have it open long enough to do a proper backup?

      • Well how are the photos getting to the NAS anyway? Laptop has to be turned on for that.

        • Yes she can copy photos from SD card to the NAS but this shouldn't take long, especially with a wired connection. Getting them up to the cloud will usually take much longer. I am trying to make this as foolproof as possible ;P (forgive the expression)

        • @aimon:

Okay, well no NAS will be able to provide you with plug and play, you will need to do some configuring.

But this combo is good enough, http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1-Bay-Synology-DS115J-Gigabit-NAS… , plus, http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Western-Digital-WD-Red-2TB-3-5-SA… comes to $232 or you can fork out an extra $30 for the 3TB HDD that I listed about making it $262.

Use that same program that I said, above. From there the NAS can backup to OneDrive/Dropbox/etc.

        • @AdosHouse:

This sounds like a winner. Thanks :)

        • @aimon: set up resilio sync on wife's phone to sync camera roll to Nas. That's what I've done.

        • @aimon:

Why don't you skip the NAS, get a usb hd, plug in to the modem/router?

"It Was Written" is my favourite album

    • yeah but it seem people dont get "the message"

  • You want to backup your photos, think of backing up your hdd as well just in case.

what about a portable hdd connected to usb port of router?

  • WD my cloud does have auto back up via the app. I have it on and also on the Mrs phone and it works well. When we’re on the Home WiFi it backs up the photos to a folder on the NAS.
