Should I Buy a Dyson Vacuum?

If so, which one should I buy? Where should I buy? When should I buy to get the best price? Are there any cheaper alternatives?

I live in a 2 bedroom townhouse.

  • don't buy a dyson.

I've been using a $90 kmart vacuum in a 4 bedroom house for the last 5 years -faultless. sucks like a demon

You must have the succubus model

    Don't.

You really haven't told us anything.

Do you have carpets or hard floors?
    Kids?
    Pets?
How many people in the house?
    Smokers?

A lot of people like Miele (myself included)

    • yep, once you go Miele, Dysons suck

Dyson stick vac, small areas and Miele for larger area. end of story :)

We have a Dyson upright - have had it for about 8 years and it is fantastic. We also have ducted internal vaccuuming (moved into a brand new property with it) and the Dyson wins hands down over the the other system. I think we bought it from the Good Guys, way back when. Miele are good too - depends on how well it "fits" you. I thought ours would be heavy and difficult to manoeuvere but i don't have any problems with it.

  • No, get a Miele C3 or similar and throw a HEPA filter in it.

    • Second.

  • buy a broom.

  • i've got the 1st gen dyson barrel (no filter/bag needed).

It works fine, I don't have to buy bags/wash anything. It's been almost 3 years, and has had no issues.

I've bought cheap kmart ones, but honestly, there is a huge difference. Yes it still sucks (we use it at the workplace), but there's dust in the exhaust compartment, there's dust outside of the heap filter….I reckon I might be just spreading dust everywhere…

  • Buy a Miele.

  • Choice magazine says only one of their models is a recommended buy. I forget which one. Might be the stick.

  • I have got both the Dyson upright and handstick. The upright started malfunctioning and lost suction after 3 years. Dyson denied liability as its out of warranty despite repeated complaints to Fair Trading. The handstick played up within 6 mths and Dyson has so far replaced all major parts other than the main chamber as it is during the warranty period. I have no doubt Dyson will start fobbing me off the moment the warranty expires. I'll go for a Miele next time but the bags are expensive.

    • We've got three dysons. Bought a barrel vac years ago and found it really good. Then bought a stick vac when we got stairs to vacuum, so much easier to handle. And I found an upright on the side of the road to use as a workshop vac, I didn't expect it to work, but it does. All three are work really well, except for occasionally when something blocks them up, usually too big, or like a long piece of wool. Clean out the blockage and good as gold. Even the upright has cleaned up a few barrels full of really fine plaster dust during renovations and after washing out the filter it's back to full suction.

  • We have both Dyson and Miele. The Miele probably works better but you need bags. The Dyson works fine though and doesn’t have bags. It depends what you are looking for. We have a two storey house so one is used upstairs and the other downstairs, saves hauling one up and down.

  • Yes. I only buy Dyson. Their customer service is excellent and they will send you any replacement products you might want free of charge no questions asked. You don't have to take it to a repair place. Or send the part back. So it's great.
