ALDI 4 Stroke Electric Petrol Mower

21" Self Propelled Electric Start 4-Stroke Petrol Lawn Mower

I honestly wanted the regular 4 stroke Briggs and Stratton mower they are selling in other states, but in Victoria Aldi are selling an electric hybrid style mower.

Seems pretty good, but has anyone had any experience with such a style of mower?

They look interesting. I am not a fan of Briggs & Stratton i have always had issue with there engines but its probably easier to find parts for them then a generic engine. I say bring back the Victa two strokes unbeatable!

Bunnings has this one. Seems to have a generic engine.

Also check out the Kogan mower. This is using a B&S engine a little smaller then the Aldi one. It is cheaper.

These both do not have the electric start the idea sounds good but its just more thing to break lol. My old Ryobi whipper snipper was tuned so well it started first time its all about maintenance.

You can always take of the cover to your starter and use a drill to spool the engine.

Was about to ask why am electric mower was a 4 stroke…

I have an aldi four stroke from last year. Take out the cheap chinese torch spark plug and put in the NGK equivalent (a few dollars). Starts first time, every time. No need for electric start.

I’ve always found B&S engines to be a PITA to be honest, but being that it’s self propelled finding something else for similar money might be a trick. FWIW I’ve used Honda engines and they just go, obviously they still need TLC and care and servicing but they are great little engines that even if you skip a few services seem to be very reliable. My own preference if I was spending that much money on a mower would be to save up a bit more and go for a Honda.

I guess the question becomes if the thing does start to play fun and games after the 60 day window how easy and often are you going to need to get it repaired?

  • I'm worried about the battery lasting after a year or two. Might save for a Honda or something better.

The self propelled was something I wanted. Any positives about self propelled mowers?

Depending on your physical ability and steep your block is they can be pretty handy. I inherited my father in laws and it was handy following the mower around, rather than pushing it. I have since sold that mower and got a push mower (battery), don't miss the self propelled bit.

Downside, the mower will be heavier and more complex.

      • Do you think the battery life will last?

Need replacing after a year or two?

        • What sort of battery and how often will you use it? Lead acid will need regular use to keep it in good shape. Lithium should be better, Ni-cad is a bad idea. You will also need to ensure the mower is run long enough to fully charge the battery on each usage, which should be ok for 400m2 of lawn.

If the battery can be replaced, make sure it is a reasonably common size. If it does die, you don't want to have to pay half the cost of the mower.

  • Not sure, Aldi has a knack for not giving away much detail with their products.
Don't thin any units would be left over anyway.

But other options, that is my concern, replacement parts needed, more complex design rather than a pure 4 stroke mower.
