1GB + 5GB Bonus Data (7 Day Expiry) When Activating $10 and $30 Telstra SIM Starter Kits on Pre-Paid Extra Plans

190

Seems like a good deal considering Optus are trying to sell you 4GB data for $40

1GB + 5GB bonus when activating a kit on a Telstra Pre-Paid Extra plan.

Edit: Expires in 7 days so not THAT great of a deal but if you're away on holidays and your hotel doesn't do free WiFi it is still OK

  • 6gb?

    • I edited the original post with a photo of the sign in store

  • The Optus comment is irrelevant IMO. You can get a $30 Optus starter pack for $5

    • In that case it is the same price as above - 3GB for $5 is the same as 6GB for $10

      • But only 7 days to use this SIM!

    • +1

Yes you can, an a lot of people here have received SIM direct from Optus that won't validate which sorta invalidates the Optus one, if you get my drift.

      • +1

I don’t know about a lot of people but I got 2 sim cards validated just fine ;)

        • Did you buy direct from Optus or a third party, Aussie Post etc?
I find it very strange that Optus sent out not one but two dud SIMs several weeks apart. You would think someone would have checked before sending the second batch that the SIM was good to go. But I suppose that would mean giving customer service, something Optus seem to shun with vigor.

        • +1

          @saywhat:
3 out of 3 sent from recent Optus deal worked for me.

        • Tell you what, being a nice guy and all and knowing how much you must dislike being left out I'm willing to swap one non validating SIM with one that does that you have so you can join us, the nice guys in Optus purgatory Customer Service Hell.
Go on, don't be left out.

Honestly, you are lucky, we were not, but we got to realize price is not everything and Optus Customer service is a crap.

    • Or on eBay they are $2.50

  • 6GB for 7 days - $10.

Technically it's a deal, but not one that I would buy. Much better deals exist.

    Not a deal.

    • Fair enough. Useful to me, bf is away and took his phone with unlimited data so looking for something to tide me over in Netflix before he comes back (that I don't have to wait for to get posted)

      • Unlimited data phone? Haven’t seen that before

      • Look out for the $1 - $5 SIM deals like recent Kogan (16GB) & little older OVO (8GB) for 30 days. Optus were offering 14GB over 28 days for $5 (all my SIMs worked).
But enjoy your data for now.

        • I got a bunch of cheap Kogan sims from one of these deals a few months ago, but they hardly worked. So slow I could rarely get any pages to load and eventually gave up on them and didn't activate them all (I got about 5). So I'm shy of Kogan deals now.
I did get one of the $5 14gb sims and just ran out of data yesterday. I wish I had bought more, but I didn't know how much I would need and didn't want to waste money :-p oh well, hindsight

          @Quantumcat:
It's mainly the network used by the reseller (Kogan etc) that causes slow data, etc.

It depends on the services in your area. Optus is nearly unusable for me at home, so resellers on that network will also be slow. Kogan (Vodafone 4G network) was fast, but OVO & Optus are so slow.

A lot of us build up a stockpile of SIMs when on special, making sure to activate by the promotion date. I only spent around $1/month for over 2 years for phone & 3GB+ data. Paying full price as in this deal is unwarranted.

        • @Infidel:

Wow, your doing well at a $1/month for phone & 3GB + data. Been using the Kogan $1/4.95 sims for a while myself, but need to port every second month to other sim if you want to keep your number. What other $1/free sims have you used.

Am currently using a Free Amaysim unlimited/1.5GB data for six months myself from that ozbargain deal, but often pay $5/$10/$15 for various types of sim starter packs. The recent Vodafone $5/$50 value sims from HN deal were good, stocked up on those.

        • @ozhunter68:
(About 20) Telstra $30 packs for $1ea in many deals from over 2 years ago (last pack expired in May) - used included $30 Credit on Play for purchases like $16.50 cash back with Rebatr, free Boost $20, then $1 Kogan, $1 OVO. Now have run out of $1 packs (still have 3 free Vodafone $50 packs) 😭

I use 2 SIMs - 1 on a long term prepaid plan for permanent number (eg Telstra LongLife for 6 months, then not recharged for 6 months) for incoming calls, other SIM for outgoing calls & data - thrown out after month. Wouldn't suit many, but often cost nothing or made a nice profit using Rebatr! (As I am overseas on holiday at least 1 month a year, I don't need SIMs all year. Cheap Prepaid suits me.)

Saw the free Amaysim offer before it became a deal, became distracted, and missed out.
Realised I had plenty of SIMs. Good for you!

        • @Infidel:

Wow, I knew you score some great sim deals, but sounds like you have it honed into a fine art :-)

I keep a close eye on ozbargain for deals and like reading your and others very informative comments in order to learn and maybe benefit from more deals as well as the odd comment to help out some newer ozbargainers.

Missed out on the Telstra $1 sims, you win some and lose some. I save a lot on phone/data credit/recharge compared to most regular people, but can still raise the bar as still room for improvement lol.

It's kind of fun and challenging to get the cost down as low as possible. Happy bargaining ( former Bruce).

      • Phone with unlimited data? What plan is that?

        • +1

The old Optus $2 days sim. We use it as our main internet supply

        • @Quantumcat:

Is that unlimited data for $2 per day? Think I remember reading about those but was too late for that deal.

        • @ozhunter68: yep. Only worthwhile getting if you don't otherwise have access to lots of data at low cost (the best I can get on ADSL is 80kbps so it's good for my situation)

        • @Quantumcat:

Thanks. Just to clarify, that waere part of older sim only plans were they? No longer available now?

Now for Optus prepaid only the $2/500MB unlimited a Day or $4/1GB unlimited a Day.

        • @ozhunter68: Yes they're not available anymore. You have to get a sim from ebay or similar

        • @Quantumcat:

Buy from ebay from a private person who wants to sell his no longer wanted sim?

Were they not on a postpaid plan, or were they prepaid?

What is the actual sim/plan/contract called?

Sorry for all the questions lol.

        • @ozhunter68: It's prepaid, $2 gets taken from your balance if you make a call or use any data. You'd probably find it if you searched for old $2 days unlimited data optus sim

        • @Quantumcat:

Thanks for info. So just search ebay for $2 sim that is old ( not sure how old ), but has not expired ( as in too old to activate )?

        • @ozhunter68: it'll be an active service that someone doesn't want to use anymore

        • @Quantumcat:

Yep, thought so much. Probably hard to find and worth more than $2. Would the sim not be registered ( originally signed up ) to that persons name etc ? Also no hope in porting number as would have to just take old phone number. All that would not matter to me for under say $50 for a sim like that.

Will those always remain active ( service not cancelled or plan changed ), as long as you keep credit on there of course?

        • @ozhunter68: it will be more like $200-$300. Not sure about if you can change the number, but they should supply a form to change ownership of it. Yes the plan will remain the same as long as you keep credit on it.
Life I said, only really worthwhile if you have no other source of cheap reasonably quick internet :)

        • @Quantumcat:

Wow, that much. I suppose it's worth it if you can't get any other forms of big data. In my area Optus 4G/3G is not always fast, even becomes almost unusable at times and really slows down after close of school hours lol. I just activate cheap data sims for whatever Telco has good deals, most often Vodafone and at the same time Telstra and Otus for when Vodafone slows down or I need to activate sim before expiry date. Am just renting here with no cable connected as exchange is full up, and when spot becomes available they want to sign up to 2 yr. contract. Not sure how long to stay here, so mobile prepaid it is.

Thanks so much for the good info, might look into that in future if in good Optus 4G area.

          Happy ozbargaining :-)

        • +1

          @ozhunter68: it's 3G only :) No worries!

  • It’s not a deal. I bought one for $10 I thought I am going to get 6g even expires in 7 days, still a deal cause I am moving house and wait for network to re-install. But actually you have to recharge another $30 at lease to get this 5g bonus. So it means you spend at least 40. I prefer Optus $30 for &10, I can buy 4 sims 1g/d and last longer.

    • +1

Just activated a 10 dollar sim a few days back.
Received 1 Gb standard and 5 Gb bonus, used the one Gb and then started using the bonus data. ( even got a txt to tell me the 1 Gb was running down to the last 5 meg )

      • +1

Yep, me too. Got 6GB for 7 days. Also the $30 starter packs get 6GB over 28 days, not seven. When getting them for $10 or $15, or that recent Coles bonus $15 Coles/JB hifi gift voucher deal works out well.

  • Don't forget the Onedrive offer also…

have an upvote OP, my dsl shit the bed and i have to wait for the telstra tech to come and fix it(hopefully within 7 days)

  • Is the 5GB Bonus Data can be used right away or it's in the data bank?

    • There's a 10GB deal now I believe.
