Xiaomi Wi-Fi Repeater 2 Not Working

I bought the Xiomi Mi Wifi repeater 2 from a recent deal.

This thing is doing my head in. I plugged it into a USB port. I downloaded the Mi Home app on my iPhone 7 (running iOS 10.3.3), but using the english version, the only option I have is to add a gateway ( I don't have a MI gateway, so can't proceed), there is no selection for the Repeater (only smart powerpoints and things)…I downloaded the chinese version, which got me a little further but then also can't add the device - it says "The current version does not support the device, please upgrade to the latest version then add" when I scan the QR code trying to add device. Also can't select the Repeater (no choice available).

I am on the latest version of Mi Home…just not on iOS 11.

I tried selecting the wifi which appears on my iphone list, and joined it, but then there is no internet available - which I assume because I need to pair the device to then give it my WiFi router credentials in order to get it to repeat the signal.

Any suggestions?

  • I set one up last week, but on an Android phone. On Android, when you start the app and tap the + icon, then select Add Device, it goes to a new screen and it scans automatically. The scan icon is at the bottom, which is not very obvious and it looks like the screen is not doing anything. Just wait on this screen for a few minutes and once the repeater is detected, it will appear on this screen. If it is not detected, try to reset the repeater by holding down the pinhole using a pin for a few seconds and then repeat the process again.

    • thanks for the info. once you add it, do you then have to enter your current wifi network credentials for it to be able to repeat it?

      • Yes, for me, that's what happens. Once the repeater appears on the screen I mentioned before, you tap on it and it will prompt you for your wifi credentials. BTW, please make sure the repeater is powered on before you start setting it up. :)

        • Ok I've now reinstalled the app and selected Mainland china and now I can at least see the repeater 2. I select my wifi and enter the wifi password then it goes from 0-100%, but it says connection error :(

Yellow light blinking - didn't receive information from Wi-fi … hmm

        • @dammit: Do you have an older iphone? I have an old iphone 4s which I still use to setup some of these devices where setup is required through the app. I am not sure why, but setup seems to work fine on my older iphone but sometimes not on newer phones. Once the device is setup against your account, the device can be controlled using the app on the newer phones without any problems. Perhaps this can be something you can try because I am out of ideas, otherwise you will probably have to send it back as faulty. :)

  • Was using an iPhone 7 - but I just changed the router from WPA+WPA2 to straight WPA2, and it's now working - hooray! Thanks for help :)

  • I set one up last week and followed the GearBest guide and it worked no worries. Infact it performs better than the dlink unit I was using.

  • Just got my Xiaomi wifi repeater. Couldn't get it to pair with the modem. Had a chat with the tech guys at my provider. They advised that my modem security was set ok to WPA2 - PSK and the encryption was ok, set to AES. The did say that i should change the settings (Wireless - Advanced) for the bandwidth to 20Mhz (was 40 Mhz)
tried that, and worked like a charm. Definite improvement in the signal…. happy at last
