Unsure about Quality from Different Watch Vendors

Hey guys,

Just making this post to try and get a bit more information regarding who to buy a watch from. I'm looking to purchase something similar to the "Daniel Wellington Classic Bristol Watch". I have heard that these are very overpriced for what they are, but I really like that minimalist design and haven't seen anything else that has taken my fancy.

Now I see these on say Asos for $329 (plus 20% discount), But I also see the same watch for much cheaper on ebay and other websites for as low as $146

Are these others sites selling fakes? Or is there warranty issues?

Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated as I feel I'm definitely missing something.

  • I've got a DW St Mawes and they're definitely overpriced, although I bought mine for a price low enough I didn't really care.

Catch of the Day have them at a reasonable price, but not the Bristol (St Mawes is similar I believe). At least you know they're genuine.

  • Daniel Wellington is overpriced because they take cheap, off-the-shell movements, slap them in a nice case, and jack up the price 500% to reflect the brand. Reason why the prices fluctuate is because the cost of production is so low, ditto with Michael Kors or Shinola.

    • slap them in a nice case

even the case looks to be generic off the shelf stuff (see my links below), the only thing they have done is having "DW" printed on the dial………

but I guess this is the price you paid to be one of the cool kids? :)

      • I'm giving it the case benefit of the doubt, due to differing tastes. I wouldn't pay that much for a generic quartz movement, but if the OP likes the design? Sure, okay.

  • for your regular quartz movement generic watch, just look for those $10 deals from gearbest/aliexpress that pops up in here from time to time, have a browse on those websites and see if there are anything that tickles your fancy.

ie these ones looks similar enough to what you want, at 1/10 of the price

otherwise, have a look on watch discussion forums like www.watchuseek.com, just don't mention you are looking for Daniel WangLinHung or people might laugh at you :)

  • I have a Timex Weekender Fairfield. It's also quartz movement which has a similar minimalist design to the DW's but at a fraction of the cost.

Great watch, but the only downside is the ticking may be a bit loud in a quiet room.
