Can I Claim TRS if I Buy a Phone from Qantas/Velocity Stores?

Hi,

I am planning to use up a few of my points to get a phone from a qantas or velocity store. Also I have a upcoming overseas trip. Am looking to see if I can claim GST at airport for the phone.

The phone after points comes to $366. I have bought stuff before from stores but have come with a $0 bill (Have been stingy never paid for a store item in cash if have points). This is the first time am going to get stuff part in cash and part in points. Would I be getting a bill for the whole amount or part or nothing at all.

Any idea or experience about it. Any input would be helpful.
Thanks.

What is the GST component on the invoice? That's the amount that you can claim on TRS.

    Simple.

    • Yes I know that, but when you buy stuff from a store using points and cash would GST be included?
Have you bought stuff from the store(qantas or velocity) and had GST added to it?

      • I would have thought the $366 would have a gst component.
You raise a good point. Who pays the gst component if an item is bought with points?

        • OP does, as normal, since prices of rewards are GST inclusive. Only twist here is might be able to get some of it back via TRS. It depends on whether the invoice states the price after points or the original price.

        • @greenpossum:
I understand that, but who pays on the points component?

        • @Stewardo: I think he won't get that portion.

        • @greenpossum: I know, but does the gst get paid by airline or supermarket? Or is giving items away gst free? Is really off topic I know, but these points schemes seem to operate like pseudo currency.

        • @Stewardo: I think the value of the points includes GST.

The fact that you previously got $0 invoices in the past suggests that you will get a $366 invoice this time, i.e. you won't get a GST refund on your points.

    • I am guessing that's how it is going to be.

That's a terrible use of points. Why not upgrade to business instead?

    • I guess it is. In some other situation wouldn't do it. But need a good phone urgently after partner lost a phone to a theft. Need a good phone and short of cash so thought this would be good time to delve in points as had no insurance. Besides upgrade to business am not sure about it. Was curious to know if can save further by TRS but I am guessing very few would know about it.

Sell your points and then not only can you afford a brand new phonr but you'll be able to claim the full amount of gst as well as have $$ left over from selling the points. It's a no brainer.

        • You are a legend @nurries. It just dint think of it. Makes sense. Thanks man.

        • @Ajax:

          Happy to help :)

        • Wouldn't the points be sold at a lower rate than they can be redeemed for? So the only benefit would be the claiming of full GST, but that would be offset by being more out of pocket?

    • Great point, OP please jump into your time machine.

How many jb hi/Westfield gift cards can you get from the points on the airline store,
Use the gift cards to go In store and price match phone for cheapest you can find.
    Then claim full GST T/Refund
Would either of you be eligible to claim the phone cost as work related expense. Minus gst.

    • A 90k would give gift cards worth 500

  • Just FYI, best way to spend your points (usually):
    1. Sell them at 1c/point
    2. upgrade to business class
    3. Not usually the best but wait for deals like 25% off flights when you pay with points. This usually attracts taxes and fees which defeats the bargain.

Even if there is a sizzling hot deal on products, you will still be paying more.
E.g. Qantas store currently have Bose QC35 II for 87,150 points (points worth $871) when you can find deals on OB between $400-$450 for QC35 II.
Don't let the "need one urgently" excuse rip you off. you can temporarily revert to an old phone until you wait for a good deal on your new phone to arrive whether it be AU stock or Grey import.

    • Happy to sell. But is it allowed or correct? besides who would risk buying it. Have around 90k points left. @ 1c/point would be great as gift cards would give me half of that.

      • Allowed no, but plenty of people do risk it. Check classifieds section

      • Depends on how much value you place on your qf membership also…
Search the forum for examples where people got caught and what happened to them.

        • So in a nutshell, what happened to them?
          Cancelled all their remaining points?
          Barred from flying QF?
Put up on a criminal charge?
          Beheaded?
