[REDDIT] GearBest Has Been Offering Donations for Users to Post Threads about Their Products

Gearbest were caught on reddit trying to provide donations in exchange for posts about about their website and items. They have now been banned.

My concern is if something similar has happened on OzBargain?

Thanks

Is this surprising? Literally all the online stores have incentives for websites to share deals. If we look at the news/blogs sites dedicated to China tech you'll find plenty of affiliate links and plenty of sponsored posts.

I think this answers your question

Correct. I'm well aware of how these websites operate.

An example would be this post from Gizchina. It's a blatant ad and Dodocool (Tomtop) would be giving them an incentive to post. Rather than the ad banners you see displayed up top and on the right.

How does reddit work? The posts seems to be all over the place. How do can I see op?

    • click on the blue words in the original post where it says 'caught on reddit'

So the tl;dr is that gearbest wants make donations or give free items to websites and asks them to chat about these or other items?

Every company does this, not sure why you continue to have a vendetta against Gearbest in particular. Just the other day Joybuy contacted a few of us to pay us to post for them, it's not uncommon at all, just depends on the integrity of the users. Store reps like Clear are the good ones in this community, they direct great deals to us through Chinese websites and it makes this a better place rather than hidden backdoor deals.

😍 I made my position clear from day 1 and always TWAM the mods about any changes 😜

Exactly, can't see why people like the OP rip these companies to shreds by just reading Reddit threads.. We have a different environment here and people like you are forthcoming about any clashes of interest!

Probably because OzB is being inundated with Gearbest posts over the last few weeks. Easy to see why someone would think there is more to it.

    • I think you raise a good point with the integrity of the users. We know that GB behaves likes this but its hard to police how transparent users are in their posts. For example if I received a donation to make this post how would anyone know at all if I dont declare it?

      • I agree that it's hard to police, but I haven't seen any unusual behaviour with Gearbest, either the rep post themselves or offers coupons for others to share, no hidden deals. I haven't seen the same behaviour from many other chinese retailers on here either, but yes, it's hard to police..

        • He just tried to put another post up, starting to get suspicious of this guy….

        • @nocure: it was a PSA for people to check if their xiaomis are legit as multiple reports from ozbargain are popping up of receiving fakes. Only trying to help :(

    • They weren't making the offer to a website, they were making it to the moderator of a website. You may be correct in imagining that to be a normal and expected behaviour elsewhere. It isn't here.

      • They weren't making the offer to a website, they were making it to the moderator of a website.

the moderator/s are working for the website, either in a paid or unpaid capacity. any donations accepted by the moderator could seen as an acceptance by the website.

        It isn't here.

there is no way for members to verify that this is or isn't happening.

The website apparently disagrees with that assessment, and has decided the moderator, in such a situation, was clearly working for themselves.

"there is no way for members…"

I'm curious as to what, if any, bearing that has on whether or not such behaviour is acceptable? Gearbest offering bonuses for reviews is something I have no problem with. A moderator of a Reddit section accepting such a bonus but failing to declare it whilst shilling for them clearly isn't as the response of Reddit shows.

I'm not sure Gearbest are the ones to be censured tho. They made an open offer.

Not surprising, all you need is to look at the brain-dead 5 star reviews on their products to know something is up.

And well deserved for closing off a message with "wish you a good vape" smh.

But where else am I going to get 90c mini tripods, and xiaomi led lights from :o

Haven't had a problem with gearbest, received every one of my orders πŸ˜„

Bit of an overeaction. They weren’t insisting on positive reviews, just exposure to their products. Take mods on Reddit with a grain of salt, a lot of them are on power trips.

  • interesting. i always suspected that reddit was shill central

  • Nooo my comment got deleted along with your other thread!

May seem completely unrelated to the topic now but:

Has anyone noticed anything different about the Xiaomi Mijia pens bought from Gearbest vs elsewhere?

In comparison to the pen I bought from TinyDeal, the logo on the clip isn't shaded in + the edges aren't as rounded on the GB pen.

    • The Mijia pens are just rebadged KACO pens. IIRC there are 2 or 3 variants of the Mijia pen so that could be why.

  • Youtube reviews (especially beauty/cosmetics related) are full of these 'free products for review' incentives.

  • I don't see any problem with this, as long as the reviewer is truthful about their experience

    • truth goes out the window when money is involved

truth goes out the window when money is involved

Money is also a powerful incentive to tell the truth.

        • from what I've seen surrounding gearbest, If you give a good review they will give you more if you give a bad review its cya later. I mean, they wont allow 1 star reviews on the website to pass through…..

  • Nah I don't care. If a deals a deal, great, if not, nobody cares.

  • Tomtop does the same but after every order lol Have been contacted multiple times always after making an order.

  • Google rewards only the other day gave me double the rewards if I left a review on a businesses page (instead of the usual just select one option).

I don't see what the problem is, unless you only get the money if you write a positive review.
