What Games Will This PC Run?

Hey Guys,

After about a week of contemplating and considering I am purchasing a Gaming PC with the intention to play the odd game on it. I'm by far not a hardcore PC gamer as most of my multiplayer is done on my PS4 Pro (bigger friend base). I'd want to play PC and XBO exclusives (Halo Wars, Civ etc.)

List of games as an example

Player's Unknown Battlegrounds
Halo Wars 2
Gears of War 4

My Budget is $1700.

This is my build list, am I doing okay? (Mouse, Keyboard and Monitor already sourced)

1x Lite-On 24X Internal DVD Writer $29.00
1x Corsair VS550 550W Power Supply $65.00
1x Corsair Hydro Series H55 Quiet Liquid CPU Cooler $79.00
1x Cooler Master N300 Black ATX Case, No PSU $58.00
1x TP-Link Archer T6E AC 1300 PCI-E Dual Band Wireless Adapter $69.00
1x Western Digital WD Blue 2TB, WD20EZRZ $99.00
1x Western Digital WD Green 240GB SSD $119.00
1x ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1060 AMP! Edition, 6GB $385.00
1x Intel Core i5 7500 CPU with MSI H270 Gaming M3 MB and Corsair 16GB DDR4 RAM $639.00

Total: $1652.00 (inc. freight costs) build by: www.scorptec.com.au

Appreciate any and all feedback!

    • there's always that one person.. -.-

      • you forgot jv

        • JV?

It has been too long since I've seen that name grace my OzB screen..

In all seriousness though, do you think that build will run those games listed?

        • GTX 1060 will pretty much run anything you throw at it at 60fps. standard 1080p or up to 1440p resolution is fine.

          @ThePriceMatchGuy:
Your PC spec is good enough to run most game, but probably not at the highest settings.

Like @scrimshaw suggested, LAN is the way to go if you are serious is gaming. Depending on where you live, You really don't want your neighbours Netflix video jammed up your wifi (i.e. wifi network latency).

I live in an apartment of 24 units, and I can see at least 14 SSIDs from 2.4GHz wifi signals, and 3 5gHz wifi. my 2.4ghz wifi ping time to my router varies between 1ms to 150ms at "peak" hours (7pm till 11pm). I think most of them just managed to Netflix and never chill.

        • Actually… where IS jv?

Corsair Hydro Series H55 Quiet Liquid CPU Cooler $79.00
    Corsair VS550 550W Power Supply $65.00
    Intel Core i5 7500 CPU

The liquid CPU cooling is a "maybe" even if you are overclocking, however you have chosen a low end power supply and a non-overclock capable CPU and motherboard. If you switched over to Ryzen, you can can overclock on any kind of Ryzen CPU and you'd just need a cheap B350 mobo. AMD's standard Wraith Spire coolers are also pretty good too.

My suggestion is to ignore the CPU cooling for now and just use stock cooling, but pay a bit more for a better power supply unit (550 watts is enough, but aim for a PSU with all-Japanese capacitors and modular cabling.

The corsair VS series is pretty lousy and basic, maybe grab a Antec High Current Gamer or EVGA Supernova B2. They cost maybe $100~120. Expensive, but worth it in the long run.

    TP-Link Archer T6E AC 1300 PCI-E

Good to also consider Powerline networking. you can buy a 1200mbps decent kit for $99 or $120 nowadays. However, it's not guaranteed to be good in every kind of situation (depends on your home's wiring quality)

    • Powerline stuff is decent if your only options are it.
I have it on my gaming rig and I can't complain really.

Are there any current games that this wouldn't play?
It seems a pretty highly specified machine, hardly a budget build.

    • You think this'll even run most games out now? (Shadow of War, GR: Wildlands)

      • At 1920x1080 it is a good GPU.

    1. Do you really need a DVD drive?
    2. Get a better PSU. There is a tier list floating around just google it.
    3. Don't need an aftermarket cooler for a locked i5.
    4. $1.6k for a 1060 build is way too much. Unless something's changed it should easily get you a 1070 build? A decent 1060 build should be around the $1.1-1.2k mark.

      1. yes
      2. will look into it.
      3. predominantly using it for the harsh, hot conditions here in the NT.
      4. 1070 pushes this build out a little too much, 1060 AMP 6GB doesn't seem too bad?
      • Check this build someone on reddit put together a month ago. Prices may have changed slightly but still very relevant: https://www.pc-kombo.com/share/ByGoYvvp

        This is a Ryzen build.

        • 1070 pushes this build out a little too much, 1060 AMP 6GB doesn't seem too bad?

If you can squeeze it into the budget and this PC is primarily for gaming at 1920x1080 then it makes sense for eye candy graphics but I can't see where you can cut costs other than the CPU cooler (this is overkill for a non-overclock CPU and the included stock cooler is quiet and effective).

The GTX 1060 is a good GPU for this resolution still.

      • The processor comes with a cooler which will be fine even for NT.

Regardless, H55 won't be better than say a coolermaster 212x for half the price.

$1692 postage to my postcode is $43 so it's $35 ogver your $1700 budget and that's with a GTX 1070.

AMD Ryzen 5 1600 Processor with Wraith Spire
MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Armor OC 8GB
    Corsair Vengeance LED CMU16GX4M2A2666C16 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4
ASRock AB350 Pro4 Motherboard (I have this motherboard myself for my Ryzen 1700 OC to 3.8ghz)
Cougar MX330 Mid-Tower Case (just picked a cheap one around $50)
Thermaltake Smart RGB 700W 80 Plus Power Supply
    Samsung 850 EVO M.2 250GB SSD
Western Digital WD Blue 2TB WD20EZRZ
    ASUS DRW-24D5MT 24x DVD Writer
TP-Link Archer T6E AC1300 Wireless Dual Band PCI Express Adapter

    Why Ryzen 1600 over the i5 7500?
    1. it's cheaper
    2. It's faster multicore and matched the 7500 once overclocked for singlecore.
    3. it's overclockable

That soundtrack is still amazing to this day.. timeless like old school starcraft

  • Get rid of the water cooling (stock cooler for non-K chip is fine) and get a 1070 with tht extra money. Also get a better power supply.

  • I'm currently awaiting the parts for my custom PC. I have a free Windows 8 product key that I am going to use. Can accessibility features pathway method be done from Windows 8 to secure a free upgrade?

    • Windows 10 Pro OEM keys are ~$39 on Kinguin atm

      • Cheers, but the free method is always better! Did that instead :)
