Advice for Unused, Registered Car and Selling It to Car Wreckers

G'day,

This is my first post on the OZB forum. I need advice regarding my 2000 Mazda Metro 1.3L Automatic Hatchback. The car has done 130,000km. I don't use my car however it is currently registered til July 2018 (Victoria). The car is not currently working as the battery is dead however can easily be replaced. Furthermore, there is an leak in the exhaust. The exterior is mildly damaged however apart from that the car is fine. I was using it to make a few extra bucks on CarNextDoor however once these issues arose it has been dormant for 3-4 months.

My question is regarding what to do with it? I've contacted local Car Wreckers and they've offered $150 cash (including pick it up). I could sell it however that means getting a road worthy (i.e. could be expensive). I think I should cut my losses and get the $150. The tyres are in very good condition.

Thoughts? Opinions? Obviously, the wreckers could make money off my vehicle. What's the best way to dispose of my car whilst maximising the amount of cash I obtain?

I would greatly appreciate any thoughts and advice.

Kind regards,

    sell it unregistered.

    some one will offer $300.

    take it.

Someone will buy and pick it up even though there is no working battery in it?

      • Yes, and will likely pay you more than wreckers.

I think it is worth around 500.If someone want to fix it and use.So better to post on Gumtree.Put price around 800 -1000$ , when buyer come if he/she try to bargain sell it for $500.

    • Cheers :)

Replace battery, sell as is. Should get reasonable money if it only has 130k kms on it.

Oh and be a bit careful if selling on gumtree. Cash only seems to be the recommended option, and resist the urge to ship it to the guy on the oil rig.

    • I can replace battery but the car will be registered under my name. Should I de-register it first before selling it?

      • You can.

We just bought and sold our cars in SA, but did the paper transfer at time of purchase and paid/sold with cash.

I suppose the only issue would be that if the new buyer wants to drive it away they're going to need to register it first.

Being in SA, I'm not sure how roadworthy's would work though? I'm not sure if that's something that the seller needs to do or the buyer does after they purchase? Sorry.

You dont have a choice, unless you want someone elses speeding fines.
To sell it with registration you need a roadworthy, which you obviously dont want to pay for.

Take off the plates and go to Vicroads, they'll mail you a cheque with the remaining value of rego.

Ensure you give and receive a receipt when you sell it.

    • crap! I was going to get ripped off by the wreckers. that's amazing amount of mulah!

someone will buy it in that condition. Don't worry about replacing anything, unless you want to go for the full roadworthy. There is no point going half way. Just make sure you advertise its faults so the buyer doesn't get annoyed when they find out stuff and try to offer you less.

Also note that, when you deregister the car/rego, Vicroads will refund you back the remaining time you have left on your rego, in your case that's bout 9 months worth!
