Pittosporum hedge (Silver sheen?) dying (Melbourne)

I have 2 huge Pittosporum hedges (next to each other). 1 of them is dying….the leaves are turning brown and crispy. The other hedge is still healthy.
I never applied water or fertilizer and they were green and lush until now

1) Any idea what happened and how can I save it? I thought Pittosporum are supposed to be hardy :S
I have applied Seasol and have been watering every day but I'm afraid it will cause root rot.

2) If it can't be saved, I'll need a replacement. It will look so ugly with a huge gap between the hedges. What hardy hedge (around 2-3m high) would you recommend?

  • Do you have any photos you can post ?
Brown and crispy leaves sounds like it is parched. Even though you have never watered it has anything changed around you - it may have been drawing moisture from somewhere that is no longer available.

      Photo above. Nothing changed…

Even when it's more than 40c in last year's summer, I never watered them and they still look good.

Could it be poisoned by someone?

  • I had the exact same thing happen, to the exact same plant. I could never work out if it was too much or not enough water or too much sun? It was western sydney in blazing hot summer of 2015/16

One day they were alive and thriving, then started to die and couldn't seem to be saved

    • I googled it…it looks like some people had the same issue "sudden death" for no reason. So it's a hardy plant but prone to "sudden death"? :S

It's a huge hedge and I think it may have been there for close to 20 years and now all of a sudden it's dying/dead….it's a mystery!!

  • Roundup

  • Hmm, very strange.

We have several of these plants, and they are very hardy- have never needed special attention and I don't even water them.

Seems like they are susceptible to root rot- maybe watering them every day is too much?
